I found this on a facebook post and thought I'd share. No batteries, no wires, no charger, no generator hub or bottle, no solar panel, no drag, and lightweight. Magic....except for the price, but maybe cheaper than a high end hub system? (I have no connection to this product or company whatsoever......) It helps to see the reviews, especially the one on bikehugger.com.... What are your thoughts?

made me do some quick searches - certainly the science is sound, but the technology may be a little self-limiting.  Their spec is you get 150 lumens at 16 mph, which is a moderate light output for riding at a pretty good clip.  If its significantly less at 10 mph, the light output may not be adequate for most people's needs.

Thanks Ron. There are two models, one where the light comes on at a lower speed for city use and another model that is brighter but comes on at a higher speed. Seems kinda strange...Needs a switch between the two somehow. I'll stick to my rechargable, bright, light light as I don't ride that much at night anywho...

I don't ride that much at night either, but I always have my Cygo blinking during daylight rides.  I think that's where the eddy current light would really come up short.

I love the concept. If anyone gets actual experience with the lights, I'd love to know if there is any flicker to the beam. In the videos, there seems to be flicker, whick would overload my brain and end me for the day (not to mention the ride).

With abandon,
Patrick

I ordered a front light. I'll report back to the group on my experiences with it.

I will vouch for Carlos Duque who wrote that blog review.  I trust his review like I would trust a close relative who works at a bike shop and rides a freaking lot.

I will also trust Eric's review.  :-)

Ditto what Will said. Carlos is by far one of my favorite people to ride with. He does rando stuff and mixed terrain stuff on a mountain bike with slicks. He'll ride through everything and anything and so far the lights are good for him.

I backed the Kickstarter for Magnic's and have a set - I have not installed them yet, but have held the "light-pod" next to a spinning rim and it lights up "like magic" !

I'm happy to install them on one of my bikes and provide photos/video/answers - and/or make it available for interested folks in the SF (East) Bay Area to take a look...

Regards
J.

Quick update: was in the process of documenting the Magnic install when I received this e-mail from the manufacturer:

"Dear Magnic Light user,

According to our customer database we have delivered a Magnic light roadbike front-adadpter (A3) to you. This adapter may break through prolonged use due to a manufacturing defect. For security reasons the adapter may not be used any longer. A replacement model is already available as a prototype, but we still have to wait a few tests before we deliver the new adapter.

Please let us know if you want to have two brake arm adapters (model A4, which is directly mounted on the brake arm as the rear light, image: adapter_change) as replacement or if you prefer to wait for the new adapter which is mounted as before on the brake mounting (up to 8 weeks waiting time is possible). In contrast to the old adapter the new adapter (see figure: prototype_A5) is not placed between tire and brakes but outside the brake body, so no problems due to the small gap between tire and brake should occur. We apologize for this production error and hope that you are well satisfied with your Magnic Light System."

So... the install is on hold for a bit - still happy to demo or loan the lights to RBW if they don't mind demoing for the curious (most folks here know the location of Riv HQ - Keven/Grant let me know if you're OK with that suggestion...)

Cheerio
J.

I recently received a Magnic Light set from Clever Cycles in Portland, OR, and installed them on my Riv Road. They were out of stock on the problematic mount, so they sent me a different style.

Mounting the lights took about an hour. Quick photos here:

I've only been able to do a quick up-and-down-the-block test ride, but my initial impression is the lights are bright enough to ride with but not as bright as an Edeluxe or other top-flight dynamo light. The tradeoff is that the lights are always on and there's virtually no drag (and zero friction).

I'll be posting more photos and results soon. I will be riding the Riv Road next weekend on a double century with a pre-dawn start and post-sundown finish, so I'll have plenty of opportunity to ride with them.
