Hi all,

I am in the market for the above items. I would prefer 10 speed comparable like an XT M772 but 9 speed is OK too. Same with the bar ends--10 speed is preferred but 9 speed just fine.

I have for sale in another post just below a pair of Hetres and Suntour power ratchet shifters if anyone wants to trade.

Thanks

Christian

Shimano 10 spd bar ends are no longer compatible with Shimano 10 spd Mtn derailleurs.
You will want to find a 9spd rear derailleur. I think the 772 is actually a 9spd derailleur.

If your frame doesn't have adjusters I would recommend finding a R derail that has an adjuster. Here is a pretty cool (modern) looking Alvio with a similar look and adjuster and half the cost.

Thanks Dave. Iahd thought the M772 was 10 speed for some reason. I do know of the unfortunate lack of compatability between 10 speed Dynasys MTB RDs but perhaps was willing myself to believe the m772 was 10.

Well the M772 is a good choice for either 9 or 10 spd bar ends or
other road shifters. I am running a M772 Mid cage with 9spd barends
and it shifts flawlessly.

9spd is cheaper, more durable and friction is still an option on the
bar ends. I'm running it as a 42-29 double in front and 18spds seems
plenty for me.

Thanks.  I was able to find an M772 from someone on the ibob list.  Now I will see if I can find some shifters before buying new.

Hey not so sure about that incompatibility comment... I have the newest version of Dura Ace 10spd bar end shifters, running a Deore long cage derailleur with an 11-36 cassette in the back of my Atlantis. No issues at all!

Exactly. It's the shifters that count less so than the derailer. The XT M772, with ten speed shifters, should work just fine with a 10 speed cassette.  The problems arise when one tries to shift a 10 speed Dynasys derailer with 10 speed road shifters, like the 10 speed Dura Ace bar ends. It won't work as the cable pull is different.

Happy shifting all

Ah sorry, I mis-read, I thought it said no MTB derailleurs worked with road shifters. I see now the discussion was specifically about the Dynasys.

Yeah.  It's a bummer the Dynasys won't work--and they are cheaper.  I have one on my mountain bike and it works quite well with compatible mtb shifters.

It would be nice if someone would make some dynasys compatible bar-ends as most of the newer higher end Shimano MTB derailers are dyna-sys.

The M592 that Rivendell carries is a good go-to derailer for now, but I wonder how long they are going to keep making them.

I have used an M4000 Alivio on my wife's bike with an 11-36 Sunrace 9 speed cassette and it works fantastic, but it's neither silver nor pretty if those things are important to you.  It is a Shadow style derailer and rated for the 36T which was important for me with her bike and I've been pleased.  It's one of the few Shadow style derailers that comes from the factory with a barrel adjuster on the derailer cable termination point.

Yeah, I hate that lack of barrel adjusters.  I'm using an M772 on my KOM (with 9-speed bar end shifters) and I had to add an inline cable adjuster (no adjustable cable stops on the frame either).  The inline adjusters (jagwire) aren't that ugly and they work fine.  I can adjust it finely enough to run index if I want to.

The Gevenalle GX shifters and levers are approaching this.  They use microshifter bar end shifters mounted to Tektro ml520 levers.  The shifters and pods are not yet available on their own, just OEM.  when they are they will be the ones that will work with Dynasys.  http://www.gevenalle.com/store/products/gx-version/
