My winter project list involves:

1.  Some wheelset swapping:  Dynamo wheelset moves form Hilsen to Rawland rSogn.  New light weight wheelset goes onto Hilsen.  This can't happen yet, because the Hilsen is down in Southern California at my inlaws for some cycling over the holidays.
2.  A vintage restoration.  I'm taking possession of my dad's 1973 Windsor Carrera Sport road bike.  I'll be doing a complete overhaul, along with some modification and reconfiguration.  For hints at what I'll be working on, here's a Bicycling Magazine review of the bike:

Expect tons of photos

3.  I'll likely be making some more DIY bags/cargo-carrying units.  For sure for the prototype Hub-Area Rack, and maybe a few others.
4.  Riding enough to take a run at an SR Series in 2014.

What all do you have planned for the winter?

I plan on riding my bike this winter!

I am hoping to have my Rivendell 650b conversion complete by the Hill Country Randonneurs' 300k brevet on November 23rd.  So that would be a fall project :)

Project for me:

Build (entirely from cannibalized or parts bin parts) a single speed commuter out of my newly acquired 2TT Bombadil f/f.  Unusual mix of parts, including wooden rims, bespoke chainring and Stronglight crank, Bullmoose bars, Phil pedals, and Berthoud rack/saddlebag combo.  Here’s the new frame, with the build still a gleam in daddy’s eye:

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3708/10492202654_8ec1e22200.jpg

Project for someone else:

Third in the line of charity auction builds of old Japanese mixtes, along the same lines as the Creamsicle Dreamcycle, here:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7045/8688847823_af6d6dc6da.jpg

And most important, staying in the saddle through the winter, to stave off slugdom.

we Texans ride all winter by definition.  Best time to ride here.  My daughter was blasting on her bike last weekend - hadn't gone for a serious ride since August, and she forgot how fun and fast it was.
Looking forward to see how the Winsdor ends up Bill.

Thanks Ron Mc, I'm looking forward to the Windsor project, and to riding through the winter.

Speaking of the Windsor project, one thing I am going to try is some Cromo Albatross handlebars.  Riv had been out of stock on them, but they are now in stock.  So, if you want that last chance at free October shipping, grab an Alba, and you will be almost there.

My invoice included:

Cromo Alba
brakelevers
pine tar soap
brass ferrules
black-n-white bandanna

Yes, joe, the dreaded 0.833"  When I was doing the inspection I was all:

"Japanese parts everywhere, that's a good sign....calipers to the handlebar clamp-25.4!  OK, lots of choices there!...calipers to the quill  21mm!  Yuck!"

Anyhow, that measurement was what made me decide to try it with the stock stem and Albas.  I would have given Albastaches a try if it was a normal quill diameter.  Another fun aspect to this is that I'm going to rebuild the wheels at 700c, and then run the fattest tires I can safely fit.  I picked up a pair of the closeout Twin-Hollows from Riv over the weekend.  This is purely a sentimental rebuild for me.  My father passed away this month (only 71), and working on this bike and then using it will play a part in my recovery process.

Bill:

A Windsor like that one was my first “nice” bike in about 1973. I actually bought the model just below the one you have—the tubular tires were a bit much for a young kid in junior high.

I eventually sold the Windsor when I got a car in high school. I liked that bike a lot, and I hope you enjoy yours in whatever form it takes.

Bill my condolences on losing your Father so young, I think it's a great idea to work on a project that has sentimental attachment as a way through the grieving process. As an added benefit once complete it will keep his spirit rolling along with you. Peace Brother.

If you plan on being in SoCal post it and lets get a Riv ride working if possible?

On the subject of Winter projects, this winter my builds are a Trek 850 rough stuff monster with parts from a recent 2003 Atlantis acquisition to be used as a Family & Friends loaner bike for S240's and the big one a complete restoration of the Atlantis, with added braze on's, kickstand plate and fresh new custom paint. The restoration will include a brand new 9 speed drive & albastashes...gotta keep busy and out of trouble. Oh and ride as much as I can as this is a golden time here in SoCal as in Texas Ron.

Thanks for the kind words.  I have a lot more to be thankful for than I do to be sad about.  Even in the circumstances of his passing, the blessings were numerous.

Regarding So Cal riding, I will be down in Corona this weekend for a cousin's wedding.  I will be riding from Corona to Redlands on the wedding day, with another cousin.

During Christmas time, my place of business is shutting down for the whole week of Christmas to New Years.  So I'll be down for most of that week, splitting time between Corona (inlaws) and Yorba Linda (mom).  The only thing I for sure will be doing is the road ride between the two, via the SART in the middle.  Anything else is TBD.

I'm sorry to hear about your father.
Mine will leave enough projects to last me into my son's dotage.

My winter projects are to re-do the Quickbeam with fenders, dynamo hub, S3X 3 speed fixed gear wheel, new fender hardware, Soma C-lines tires, and tire savers.
Replace the scratched up handlebars from the Prodigal Bicycle with the original flat bars, return the bike to my friend. Source some super cheap slick tires for it.
Open up my Sachs automatic hub and reorient the spring so it actually shifts. Sell it, maybe.
Sell a bunch of redundant bike stuff.

The wedding is at the Mitten Building and the ceremony is in the early evening.  If we do a morning ride it would be delightful to meet for lunch somewhere in the neighborhood.  That would leave plenty of time to get showered up and the suit on.  I'll hit you up off list when the logistics start to solidify

Bill interesting how the reviewer Richard Jow talks about experiencing flexture on the 25 inch and then goes on to talk about loaded touring, I wasn't touring way back in 72' but I imagine tour bikes had longer than 43 cm chain stays for touring. And as the name implies it was designed as a sport bike. And the lug with daylight humm the distributor in Carson wasn't doing a through job when loaning it out for review.

Bill,

Sorry for your loss.  I totally understand.  My father is now riding his bike again after having a heart attack over the winter, just after his 70th birthday.  It's a basic steel Rockhopper from about 1989 or so.

As for winter projects, only thinking about one.  Maybe a set of Albatross bars on the Hillborne.  Or Albastaches.  Getting a bit o' hand numbness with the Nitto flat bars on rides of over about 25 miles.

1. I am planning on converting my drop bar Bleriot to an Alba set up; then chainging the drivetrain on it.
Almost done. Just need to hook up brakes and kickstand and install new seatpost and saddle.

2. I would like to do one metric century each month through the winter, but I don't know if I will be able to handle the cold or not.
Hopefully there will be warm weather windows on my days off of work and hopefully I'll be in the mood during those times.

The Lord willing everything will work out great.

Having just survived winter, and inching (milling?) my way through the dregs of a particularly torrential spring, I'm looking forward to slightly bigger tires now that I'll soon not need fender clearance, as well as the arrival of a new-to-me Brooks Special with what I hope are ~10mm longer rails.

Doug,

No, the bike has a set of the Surly Torsion bars on right now.  Made by Nitto.  They sweep back some, but starting to think not enough.  For me, it's a weight issue.  I have too much.  Even with Ergon grips can't seem to keep numbness away.  If I could get a set of Soma Clarence to fit, those work better.

Strangely, I have less problem on drop bars riding the hoods.  Although am coming to discover a preference for a very short reach to the hoods.

Is that the Bomba that was on ebay last week?  i was thinking about it but the TT looked kinda long, are you planning Bosco bars?  Its a nice looking frame, good on you, though i'd like to know about the Tardis technology you've developed for your garage to store all of these bikes....

So sorry about the loss of your Dad...  The Windsor restoration will be special, no doubt.  Can't wait to see it.  Also, please do share the DIY bag projects... we talking corroplast creations???

My winter projects include:

- Winterizing my screened-in man-cave (with DIY velcro-mounted clear vinyl storm windows.. DONE!!)
- Finding suitable space-heater for said man-cave
- Restoring recent eBay scores:
- 1983 Fuji Touring Series IV (converting to 700c, slightly fatter wheels and Nitto Noodle bars, plus full 2-tone repaint in slightly different color scheme / re-decal)
- 1990 Trek 970 frameset... repaint/ geared commuter buildup
- SimpleOne tweak... Fixie/Freewheel SS

Slightly OT but equally fun:  Replace timing belts on my 96 Gold Wing

Plan next Riv Rally East - Spring 2014

Funds are tight, so I'm in ride-what-I-have-until-stuff-breaks mode. One project I may be able to pull off this winter is fixing up my dad's 1986ish Fisher Montare (bullmoose bars!) for my son. It needs some new cables, brake pads and tires. It's a neat old bike. Other than that, I'll just be riding around as much as I can during this time of the year that Southern Californians call "winter."

LOLOL! i grew up in southern california in the 70s, where you would walk into the Vans store and buy slip ons for $20, and the upcharge for custom was $1 extra. the factory was there in orange county

Great topic, I love seeing what is on the project docket for all of you!  As for my own list..

1. Regular Maintenance - this my first year of daily riding, the Trek and Atlantis will both need some attention wrt hub maintenance and a couple other items.
2. Atlantis dial-in... I'm thrilled with my new wheelset, need to add a couple things to include racks, the dyno light, permanent bar tape, BB replacement/service
3. XO-3 Refurb - the true winter project.  I haven't touched the bike since I purchased it about a month ago.  Wheels and drive train need significant servicing or complete replacement.

4. Wildcard/Fun thought - Single Speed/Fixed conversion.  I recently rode a SS schwinn for several days and loved it, XO-3 is a possibility using a chain tensioner or and Eno Eccentric Hub, my 650B Trek is another possibility... OR.... a new frame, vintage lightweight... :)

OK...I'm not brave enough for fixed, and I admire those who ride fixies, especially when they ride them with grace and skill...there's a local courier who rides an old flat black fixie of mysterious origins all year round in  all kinds of weather and his style is just so effortless....but when I had my old 70's PX-10 refurbished as a single-speed in 2011, I just loved it..Dare I confess, the Rivs did not get the love they deserved ?  I rode my rivs more this year, though. But I love rocking the Peugeot....crappy paint and all. Nervex lugs and Reynolds frame with 36-hole Ambrosio/Trek rims and Record hubs w 35mm Pasela tires....sweet!
