A very cool 58.7 cm Appaloosa on the Web Specials section. If only it fit me- then I could spend the next few weeks dreaming of buying it! Is it me or is the "discounted" price a little off? The invoice for the bike before tax is $5,446.00. When you add tax it brings the bike to $5,891.08. The after tax total is then discounted to $5,555.00 or almost $100 more than the non-discounted price. Since I live out of state after I pay shipping the bike would actually cost me more than if I had paid full price. Obviously an honest mistake but if you lucky enough to be the right size and nd have the $ make sure you bring it up when talking to them.

Cheers!
Chris

"Is it me or is the "discounted" price a little off?"

The thing that caught my eye is that the invoice includes $295 for F+R paul brakes, when you only get a Paul brake in front, and half of a $77 Tetkro brakeset in back.  Like you said, the person who's got the scratch can bring it up with them.

I live in Northern Ca. and get to visit Riv Headquarters once in awhile. Last time I was able to ride an Appaloosa and I was amazed with the handling of this bike. Its very eye-opening how much we give up thinking that a racer-influenced design is so good. That influence really distorts reality regarding bicycle ride and handling. That Appaloosa felt like I could bomb down any hill with total confidence.

Seriously the ugliest bike ever.

I know this one's a leftover from the prototype run, but does anyone have any insider intel on whether or not $3.5K will end up being the street price for a production frame?

I'd bother Riv directly, but I'm sure they'd rather hear from somebody who's got a credit card in their hand.

Hi Jeff,
$3,500 is the starting price for a custom bike. If/when the Appaloosa goes into production, it'll cost less. But probably not much less-- IIRC, the Bombadil is available as a "semi-custom", and runs $3,000. The Bombadil was billed as "spare-no-expense", whereas the Hunqapillar is the budgeted version at $2,000.

I'm guessing the tentacular stays add a lot of extra work to the build, hence $, so more than a Hunqapillar and towards the cost of a Bombadil (depending on special details). I don't think there will be enough sales volume for savings from economies of scale (not really characteristic of Riv bikes, anyway).

Thanks for that. Looks like the Bombadil is now "around $3500" according to the RBW site, so the price of the Appaloosa makes sense.

(Unfortunately, it's likely made the prospect of owning one go from "want but don't need" to "want but can't have"!)

You should ride one.  Its looks might grown on you.

I think it looks amazing, it's on my wish list if it goes into production.

Yeah, I agree Peter M. I am all over that bike if and when it goes into production. I have a Sam and a Roadeo now, the Appaloosa would fit really well with those. I would set it up as a cruiser with some freaky high bars like the bosco bars.

It looks like it changed to $5250.00 for the price.

I pedaled around a little on one at RBW in Walnut Creek, and it was great. The ride was cushy and dignified, but there was nothing lame or sluggish or dorky about it in the slightest. I'd ride a bike like that anywhere.

I've been itching to try one-- did they make any Mystery bikes on the small size? (Riders ~5'6"?) I'd imagine no diagatube and no tentacular stays. I'm eagerly awaiting the RCW Custom Appaloosa to check out how those features look on a small bike.

But the important part not captured in pics is the ride...

The Appaloosa is a very cool bike. I had the chance to ride it briefly and the ride is great and comfy. As others have said, it doesn't feel heavy or ride weighty....but at over 5 grand! That's custom built bike territory. In that price range you can have a bike any way you like....PeterG

Hmmm maybe i missed it, but is there any guidance on how tall you need to be to ride this size bike?

Make that $5050.00, with a free saddle! Guess I just wait it out a couple of days until it approaches Shetland prices.

I've never warmed to the riser bars.  A dirt drop stem and Albatross bars would be just the thing for my liking.

This is a great looking bike and might even fit me but it is several orders of magnitude above of my affordability league. That said, I can chalk up the mismatched grip tape to wimsy but what's the deal with the mismatched brakes?

Keven's is set up the same way, so my guess is there's either some issue with the placement of the cable stops or the routing that precludes the effective use of a brake hanger... or you're just buying the remainders of Keven's mismatched pair.

RBW can put a curve on a fork like nobody's business. That's a pretty fork there.

That fork is so pretty that you might as well ditch your heirloom flatwear and just use chopsticks from now on.

That bike is screaming for a cream headtube and windows, too.

Must be the latter. On mine, at least, there's nothing particularly unconventional about the stops, and plenty of ways to install a hanger.

Sure, what do you want to know? The only thing I've ever measured are the Brobdingnagian chain stays, which if I remember correctly are 47.5 cm. But I can measure whatever you want, and offer the matching datapoint that the bike is a wonderful fit for me (~86 pbh).

Just a general idea of sizing (i.e., compared to a better known riv). So, for example, "A 60cm Rambo fits me perfectly, and my Appaloosa is ___cm."

Hi Pudge,
I'm guessing that your proto-loosa's chain stays are longer than 47.5cm-- my 48-cm Hunqapillar has 46 cm chain stays. It looks from your Flickr pics that the chain stays are ~same length as the seat tube.

The 58.7 cm appaloosa on the Riv site now seems also to have ~same chain stay and seat tube lengths--- so I'd guess more like 58 cm... (Wow!) IIRC, an earlier protovelo version had shorter chain stays than the bike that was finally built/delivered. I could just be making this up.

Anyway, I'm sorta glad I'm waaaayy too short for the proto-loosa, because I'd otherwise be negotiating with my better half to buy it.
