The snow began falling in Maryland on Wednesday evening and by Thursday mid-day it had accumulated to about 12 inches.  Thursday afternoon and evening brought light rain, sleet and a bit more snow.  The temperature dropped overnight, and this morning we had an icy mess.  However, by 1pm the temperature had climbed to about 50 degrees, and the melting began.  I do have bikes with fenders, so off I rode into a beautiful and slightly surreal landscape.  The air temperature felt like spring, but the landscape looked like winter.  I encountered many runners forced into the street by unshoveled sidewalks.  However, I was the only cyclist I encountered during the hour.  Most streets were plowed, but some only one lane wide.  Many intersections were still slush covered.  Riding on Big Apples I navigated carefully and without incident through the slush.
The photo of my bike was taken in front of a snow pile the plow trucks deposited in front of a road crossing for a hiker/biker trail.  That will take a while to melt.  The forecast is for more light snow tonight and colder temperatures tomorrow........spring can't be too far away, right?

Erl, I have the greatest respect for you folks who trudge into the elements and do so with a happy resolve. Thanks for sharing your experience. Best,

~Hugh

Hugh,

Thanks, but I do realize my little storm pales in comparison to Patrick's CO winters and the winter they are experiencing north of me, as well as south with all the ice.

As a young man I truly loved all four distinct seasons. Now, as a less young man I wonder how much I would really miss snow and below freezing temperatures. Your SoCal photos look mighty inviting this time of year. I sure am looking forward to spring. In addition, I will be shopping all the clearance sales for winter gear to be better prepared next winter.

What part of MD?
That Victorian house in the one pic looks like a house I see in the Woodlawn/Security area sometimes.

Michael,
The greater Kensington area of Montgomery County. The Victorian in the photo is the old circle manor.

Weather, like biking, is not a contest Erl! And no matter the weather, it is down right nasty with the wrong clothing! No matter the weather, the right clothing makes all the difference. Grin.

Erl,

I'll be cursing the heat at the end of July and wish I lived else where. We make the most of what we have and where we live.

After 45 Maryland winters, I've had enough.
I was recently texting my brother in law, who lives in SF, and it went something like this:

Me: "Jeff, you gotta help me convince Eva [my wife] that we should to move to California near you guys. I've had it with Maryland winters!".

Jeff: "Are you serious?".

Me: "Yes.".

Jeff: "She's been telling us to move to Maryland!".

Sometimes the only motivation to persevere the trials of any season is the anticipation of the next one's change.

My current winter evil is the glacial formations at the edge of roadway wheel paths, accumulations of snow, slush, pothole guts, sleet in a contiguous frozen 4-6" thick sun-polished frozen solid block covering the road that resists definition by headlight and will knock you down if you veer into and bump its edge.

Marathon Winter studs leave a distinct clawing signature on the impossible surface as the wheel turns against it if you try to ride these spills out. The symmetric white scratching contrasts nicely with the dark brown of the frozen glop.

Ah, it's just winter and at least I'm riding. It may be worse in the spring by the looks of these roads after this season.

Erl, great to see you getting out and about! I haven't made it out myself all week, maybe a short one on Monday though, we'll see! I also enjoyed seeing your commuter rig with the great luggage. Between these shots and the other thread about the large saddle sacks in seriously considering a splurge once the Atlantis/Saluki deals settles out.
