Gary Fisher's take on the subject may be of interest to the list. Get that man a Li'l Loafer!

Excellent article. Whoulda thunk the food industry could be so
marketing driven? I am truly shocked.

Seriously, powdered Gatorade mixed to about half the recommended dose
works better than plain water for me on really hot days (over 90).
But there's only so much of that I can handle. I always have a bottle
of plain water on board as well, an probably drink 2 bottles of water
to 1 bottle of dilute Gatorade. The sugars make a huge mess of the
bottle and whatever drips on the frame is tough to remove.

Real food has the added advantage of tasting good & being a lot more
interesting than goo-inna-tube.

Nice article, thanks for posting. I go back and forth with this. I do like using Hammer Products Perpetuem on long rides, especially brevets but overall I prefer real food. When I did the Cascade 1200k a few weeks ago I think I used 2 to 3 bottles of Perpetuem a day and 3 gels over the course of the entire event. I think I drank about 24oz of V8 a day if not more. V8 has been a real revelation for me. Sure it's processed veggies but still better than Gatorade.

There's plenty of room for my nutrition to improve but I'll get to it tomorrow. Right now I have to head to the food carts down the street for some salted caramel and Thai iced tea ice cream from Scoop.

Repeat, repeat: a 2 or 3 hour ride is long for me, but in such cases I
like, in hot weather, weak tea with lemon and a little sugar; in cold
weather, Indian Chai but weakish with not too much milk.

(Indian chai, the real stuff: boil cheap loose tea with lots of sugar
and milk until it is at once bitter and sweet. Dilute for bicycling
use.)

Diluted Gatorade also works for me.

Yeah, diluted apple juice works too. Like I said, the V8 has been a revelation but not something I want to fill my bottles up with. I'm hoping to do Larch Mtn on Sat or Sun. If it's hot I'll probably bring a small can with me in my bag and just drink it warm at the top of the mtn (14 mile climb, no water at the top). In Just Ride Grant says something to the effect of "If your body needs it, it'll go down regardless if it's warm" which I think is true. Maybe I'll find out!

I gave up on "sports drinks" long ago. On long rides, I'll usually carry a bottle of water and a bottle of strong-as-death Irish breakfast tea. Usually, for rides under 2 hours, I won't carry anything at all unless it is really nasty hot and humid. Instead of goo-packs, I like apples or sectioned oranges or somesuch. My goo-pack imbibing friends seem to like it when I carry fresh fruit, too :)

Cheers!

On a hot, sweaty day, V8s are amazing for me. I'll drink 24oz per
stop. It doesn't replace many calories, but it certainly replaces the
electrolytes. I'm going to make my first batch of the famous Allen Lim
rice cakes this weekend and see how those taste while riding.

Wow! Patrick, I haven't thought about Switchel in eons! We used to drink that a lot back when I was a kid and working on dairy farms back home in Vermont. I think I'm going to have to make a batch!

Cheers!

Right on!  Definitely more fun to make your own, but maybe coming to a store near you soon - http://7dvt.com/2012vermont-switchel
