brake advice

I have a new-to-me Atlantis that needs brakes. I've just installed P65 Longboards and am thinking about either Paul Touring Cantilevers or Paul Mini-Motos.

Any/all experience is solicited. I want to get this right.

I love my Mini-Motos on the front of my QB and would love to have them on the rear too (the set I bout came with Touring Canti's for the rear). Good, solid, smooth stopping power.

I guess what I am driving at is can mini-motos clear the P65s? And secondly, are the touring cantis better or worse than the mini-moto side-pulls.

I am having a great time with this Atlantis. Wow. What a bike.

I just held up a pair of 65mm fenders from Planet Bike and yes, they will clear the mini-motos.

Hey Will,

It will probably depend on the tyres and stud placement to some degree. My guess, without actually knowing your setup, is that any tyres that require 65 mm fender are going to be too big for a 'cyclocross' mini V-brake. I tried full-size V-brakes with 60 mm Big Apples and 60 mm Berthoud fenders on my Bombadil, and they didn't work—this was Shimano XT brakes, which have longer arms than Paul Motolites (which of course have longer arms than mini V-brakes).

Maybe if you tell us your tyre size someone will have already tried it on an Atlantis?

Thanks. That's a good question. At the moment the bike has Continental Touring tires. I'm guessing they are 40s or thereabouts. But I am pretty sure the end game for this Atlantis will be one of the Compass 26" fatties. So big clearance is the main concern.

Took the bike out for an early am spin. I continue to be hugely impressed.

Great point, Tom. Will -- I tested it out on my Quickbeam, so the tires were 38mm MSO's. There was a LOT of clearence, but then there is a big difference between 38 and 55 mm. Sardonic grin. So I don't know if it would work, but seems close and a notch cut out of the fender seems doable.

the fattest tires I've ever seen MiniMotis get around were 700x45.  I think 26x2.00 plus fenders is too much for MiniMotos

To share some information, since I suspect as the new Compass fat tires get adopted, folks will have brake questions... My initial concern was clearing P65 fenders.

I emailed Riv and Paul Industries. Brian at Riv, reco'd Shimano CX 70s. Says he has them on 3 cycles. Paul Price was kind enough to respond as well. He reco'd Motolites.

For what it's worth, I have TRP CX8.4's and they just baaaarely clear continental 35mm file-treads with some planet bike fenders. The brake cable actually touches the fender. They are 8.4cm tall. Thinking I'll sell them because they have such limited fender clearance. 

Not to derail this... but I keep hearing talk about these new fat Compass tires... but I can't find ANY details... are there going to be wider 700c tires?? I know there is talk of fat 26ers.

The new bicycle quarterly mentions the new tires but they are not on the website yet. There is a 26 x 55, 650b x 48, 700 x 35, and 26 x 32.

On the brake thing, I have the cx70's on my hunqapillar with 2.1 smart sams (no fenders). Plenty of clearance, obviously. I've had some issues getting the rear brake to stay tight and not feel too squishy, and consequently feel it has required more maintenance than most other brakes (which my experience is mostly with road bike calipers, so likely it is user error). I am curious about the motolites for the rear, but i feel that rack clearance becomes an issue with those.

I also put the TRP CX8.4s on my wife's Atlantis with 26" x 1.5" tires.  No fenders & plenty of clearance.  I liked it so much I considered doing the same thing to my old MTB with 26" x 2" Schwalbes.  The wire would have just touched the tire, and would not have worked with knobs or fenders.  It came with cantis so I suspect the canti post location differs between the 2 bikes, with Rivendell locating theirs for maximum clearance.

You may already know, but if you need more clearance, TRP does offer a CX9 that has 90mm of arm length instead of the 84mm on your CX8.4.  However, the CX 8.4 is designed to work with Campy Ergo/Sram double tap/Shimano STI if you use them. Not sure how well the CX9 would work with integrated shifters.  Good Luck!

Not quite - 8.4's are meant for SRAM, cx9's are meant for Shimano. My dad runs cx9's with Ultegra brifters. They work better than my SRAM/cx8.4 combo.

What type of brake levers are you planning on running?
The motolites that Paul recommended are long pull, all the others are short pull. The mini motos are designed so you can run a linear pull brake with an sti or other short pull lever without using an adapter. Unless you're running short pull levers I'd do motolites with matching long pull levers if you want v brakes. If you already have levers then look at the mini moto.
I have Paul neo-retro (wide canti's) and shimano cx-70s on two different bikes and while the pauls look nicer I have to deflate the tire to remove it. The cx-70s work pretty much the same but I don't have to deflate to remove. This might not seem like a big deal but it's a pain. And this is from someone who almost never put's his bike in a car.

I have Schwalbe Marathon 47's with Paul mini-motos, the straddle wire clears the tires (barely), but couldn't possibly clear any kind of fender.

I almost did Moto-Lites, but 2 things got in the way: 1) I want to install a Tubus Logo Evo and the area looked conflicted for Moto-lites, and 2) the Atlantis has a very nice arched brake bridge that would get abandoned. Which seemed wrong.

Brian, at Riv, reco'd the CX-70 cantis, which I strongly suspect will become my ending solution, once I change to 55s.

In the meantime, it occurred to me that I had a set of Riv's Tektro 720s on a project bike. So I re-read the Riv blurb on them, and liked it, especially since I'm running a relatively new set of touring 45s under the P65s.

And so... I installed the 720s this afternoon and gave them an 8 mile loop. Very, very, nice.

I think the 720's are great if you swap pads to Kool Stop. The CX-70 are also great even with the stock shimano pads. I actually like the Shimano straddle wire thing but I couldn't use it on the front because of the nitto rack strut.

I wanted to add some more to my brake impression.

Been riding the Tektro 720s for a bit longer. You can take the Riv evaluation (on their site) as gospel. The brakes are strong, they modulate really well and they are good looking. If you are running mid-40s tires and want something that is inexpensive and works like top-of-the-line, these brakes are the answer. I really like them. I especially like the straddle system. You can lock the wire at the straddle, then adjust the springs at the calipers. This means dead-on, reliable, rim-contact performance. It's fine-tuning that you have to experience to appreciate.
