I think there is a tire that is both supple, light, and flat resistant.  Just hasn’t been invented or engineered yet, but it’s coming.  I also think the Amazon hover-delivery is going to be “normal” someday - whether to deliver emergency medical supplies, or a needed bike part at midnight.  I can’t wait.

I also can’t wait for the perfect light, flexible, perfect trail for rear-bag and front basket and frame bag frame that has beautiful lugs, paint, name, font, feel bike for my commute, rando rides, and off road meanders.  I’m guessing it will be a Riv or variant.  Can’t freakin’ wait!

For now, I’ll continue to enjoy my Gran Bois, Clement, Schwalbe, Jack Browns, occasional flats, and my waterfront rides on my Hunqa/Hilsen/Miyata.

The Amazon drone delivery will never be feasible. The energy to fly a one-off delivery vs. a filled truck with an optimized route is vast.

You know what else is vast? Our desire to have stuff delivered to us RIGHT NOW

Yeah, the desire for instant gratification can lead you down many a rabbit hole  (or up a mountain of debt...mix your metaphors!)

Actually, I don't think I've ever actually owned a bike that I didn't have to save for. I may have used credit cards to finance them, especially for cross-border shopping, but I tried  not to charge more than I could comfortably pay off .

Anticipation is sweet, too, as many Riv owners well know. Especially when the bike lives up to the dream

Brian I agree that tire is out there somewhere...just waiting for some engineer to develop a materiel that's more flexible and lighter than Kevlar.

Chris, our desire for immediate satisfaction will make it happen.

Will, give it time and it will be feasible who'd a thought we'd have drone other than Sci-Fi writers.

Ryan & Bill, yep it sure is...when the hell is my Atlantis gonna get painted and back to me. Gaaaaaaaaa!

I forgot to mention I heard through Riv that there's a Soma 650b tire being tested/produced that will have similar width like the Hetre but with a more durable casing plus a touring model with even more casing. No mention of when it'll be available?

Speaking of immediate satisfaction consisting of instant

Lifted from the Soma blog around Interbike time:

Panaracer was on hand with a sample of our new Grand Randonneur tires. They're a true 42mm slick with tubular casing for a ridiculously compliant tire. Don't worry Rivvies, we're doing a bomb-proof touring version too.

Yep. Less tread though. I hope the tour version has tread.

Interesting. 400k sq ft of where house space that's a lot. No doubt you had the same thought about the poor women walking 8 miles with out a car, she needs a bicycle! Eight miles that's a good commute. I'd like to meet her and get her a bike.

The gist of the article is really about how goods and services make it to our door with less personal interaction, there by leading to these underpaid hard working anonymous folk. I wish we could go back to when the brick & mortar stores were the norm, but I'm realistic that that can't happen always forward ever faster...

And they focused on the temp-worker aspect as well. Close to home as I
live near these "logistic centers."

While I understand how the big box stores and internet shopping hurt
local businesses, I never really considered the working conditions in
those warehouses... I don't believe the convenience of next day
delivery is worth it :-(

Looks like good things coming.  I poked around a couple of tire sites but Rivendell seems to have at least as decent a selection of the 650b as anyone.  My search was hardly exhaustive, though.

I agree it's not worth it to me I can wait I tend to plan purchase' out anyway.

I purchase on line because generally it's less expensive and easy to find what your looking for while brick & mortar establishments often balk at special ordering. I think on line shopping is the natural evolution in commerce and we have to adapt to the changing environment or be left behind. I know it's sad but the almighty dollar or what ever is the catalyst.

Heard the story on the radio on my way to work.  Made me think of my 6 years where I worked in a very large distribution facility.  During that time, I met and worked with a lot of very interesting people.  I worked 2nd shift mostly, rode my bike to and from work...  I worked there because I wanted to make a living working at a bike shop during the day, but couldn't make ends meet.  I did manage to land a job working at a Bridgestone dealer and continued working at the shop for almost 15 years, during which time my appreciation for Rivendell and practical cycles made more and more sense.  I finally gave up working at the shop because it wasn't worth my time, nor could I get excited about most of the new production bicycles and components there were to offer.

I too occasionally dream about the next new perfect product, but more often about the perfect ride.  The perfect narrow stretch of gravel, a quiet county road, watching the sun come up.  The sun on my back, breeze through my hair, the sites, the sounds, the places to go, the adventure, the discovery of a road that I've never ridden, a destinationless departure.  Finding that "Dead End" doesn't always mean that you cannot get through on a bike.  Being in the country alone, riding through the dark, the stars.  I love a good ride in the rain...  It IS time for bed
