Wow never seen a Rivendell with tubing stickers before. 

Half step triple, always thought those things were weird.  Brake release a bit rusty.  Monochome paint?  Front wheel looks out of place.  Rear wheel 48 spokes?  Odd, but probably effective.

Minor quibbles really though.  Nice ride.  I'd own it, but it's not close to my size.  Steal of the year for $550 complete.

1st gen Rivendells (Road Standard, LongLow, All Rounder, and the elusive Mountain) had those long point fork lugs and Reynolds tubing stickers.  753 frame and 531 fork (753 fork blades were out of production), made by Waterford.  Supposedly a custom butt profile (Grant's been at this a while).

That said, I can't tell if this is a RS or LL, or a true custom.  I don't know if the first gen customs were also built by Waterford.

Regardless, it's a steal for a Riv with Frankenparts.  I'd have chimed in on it if I didn't already have a Road Standard, and if others hadn't already said they'd contacted the seller.

I concur;  I have no need of it, but seeing a Riv at that price, I was even considering it, even if I just passed it along later..... sounds like it might've found a good home!

Would be a pretty nice candidate for a 650B conversion. BB would be a bit low, but that can be dealt with.

It has the same fork crown, but not the same frame lugs as my '97 Road Standard.

Yep, the chainstays do look pretty narrow.  My Road Standard fits a 650 x 38 b tire, with less than 2 mm on either side at the chainstay.  The fork legs are pretty narrow too.  But it's a great bike on those tires.

It may also be the record for cheapest Riv, especially one that says "Rivendell" on the DT.  I got mine (in better shape with better components) for $750.  Very, very happy with that purchase!

What a cool old Riv.  

I love the half-step/granny triples, and actually prefer them to the 46/36/26 set up that Riv sells.  However, I like to put slightly smaller rings, so instead of a 50/46/28 (or so) I like a 48/42/28 (or so).  And I like the rings to be Bio-Pace.  

So, now you see what kind of a person I really am. :)

I called it a custom because the original owner told me that back in '96, he called Grant and gave him his measurements and the bike was made for him. He said that back then it cost him $1700! So it may not be a custom or it may not, just don't know. The original owner is 80+ years old and had to give up cycling because of a leg injury. He used this bike to bike all over Europe following many of the tours and called out mountain passes that I'd never even heard of and I've lived in France for years. It was a sad moment to take the bike away from him at least for me, he seemed like he didn't care but with all those memories tied into this bike, I didn't believe him. I think he's in a lot of paint with his leg.

Ha! This is exactly what the Rivendell frameset I'm selling looked like before the paint came off. Nice seat pin lug thing, eyelets, headbadge, etc. Hard to beat this CL model if the size is right for you. The bb on mine has two stamps: 95015 and EVEREST. Too bad no one wants to buy an unpainted 56cm version of this CL post.

My Road pre dates the Road Standard model. Differences are minor: level TT, standard HT (no extension) Steeper HT angle. Size is 54.5 cm, Racier handling, but same slack ST and long stays as the standard model.  Lugs are Shimano. Also made at W'fd with the tubes noted below.  All this to say the "first" generation is a bit older.  Someone has probably already answered this, but what was the first actual bike sold by RBW?

Correction: dropouts are Shimano.  Lugs are the same as the standard

I've got Campy on mine, at least in the back, I don't remember what the 531 fork is. My bb is stamped 95015 so maybe the 15th of 1995? I had a chance to compare the lugs to a custom road model and even though I was biased, I thought mine were nicer, just a tad more intricate. This was many years back, tho.
