Since someone suggested it and I saw this beauty on the Asheville craigslist, I'll get this years thread started.

Please note I have no relation to the seller, but exchanged some emails and he seems like a nice guy. He mentioned his wife has a Susie ;)

$1,250 for a custom road.

It seems like a great deal if you're looking for an OG road frame. It does have a blemish from a top tube dent that was rolled out, but given the build, still seems like a good catch to me (I was tempted to buy it, but I don't need another bike)

Here's the ad text:
>>
I'm selling my Rivendell Road Custom road bike. I've had the bike for about four years and purchased the frame from the original owner. It's around a L/XL in sizing, measuring 60.5 cm from bottom bracket to top-tube (C-T), with a 59 cm top tube (C-C)--I'm happy to make any other measurements you're interested in as well. The top-tube suffered a dent early on in my ownership of the bike, but was rolled out with frame blocks and now there's not much to it, but unfortunately messed up the paint. Check the last pics for details: I've added a nice Blue Lug top-tube protector to hide the primer job and to prevent damage. I've ridden it for years without issue...it's steel.

The build is pretty stellar. Here's the details:

⦿ Made in USA lugged Rivendell Frame, Joe Bell paint. Original paperwork included.
⦿ Cane Creek threaded headset. It looks like a modern 110, but is unmarked. It's gorgeous.
⦿ Rivendell Silver caliper brakes. Very powerful.
⦿ Velocity Quill Rims, Velocity Road hubs, Sapim Laser Spokes.
⦿ 700x35c Continental Grand Prix 5000 AS TR tires, set up tubeless.
⦿ Campagnolo Veloce brifters, Shimano XTR (M900) derailleurs, Vintage Specialized ST-4 with the XTR rings. 3x8 and shifts flawlessly (the brifters could do 2x as well, but you would need to play with the chainrings/FD to make work).
⦿ Nitto S83 seatpost, Nitto Deluxe 100mm stem, Soma Highway One bars (46cm)
⦿ Specialized Power saddle
⦿ MKS pedals.

More info: 77cm saddle height in the photo.

As I tell myself, "I do not need another bike" and also "I'm just asking for a friend," I wonder out loud whether this custom in Asheville is a 62cm frame, a number which fits better for a 59cm top tube.

To test this, I measured the pixels from the center of the crank to the top of the top tube, and I got 354 pix. If the saddle height is indeed 77 cm, then we'd expect about 450 pixels if the nominal 60.5cm height is correct and about 440 pixels if it's 62cm -- I measured and get 448 pix. Given the fact that the tape would naturally be moving a little in the "z" direction, I think that the 60.5cm measurement is pretty close accurate.

FWIW I measure the top tube length to be close to the seat tube height. I think that's just the difference between the CTT and CTC measurements, which adds up because by eye this looks close to square.

The seat tube may in fact measure 60.5 cm. Both of my customs are 60.2 cm. Nobilette (and the previous builders of Rivendell customs) can make a frame any size you want.

I am skeptical the frame is a 62. Grant's frames are usually long. My top tube measures 59 cm.

I need a gross of those t-shirts. This bike is my size.

Corwin

Regarding that custom with the repaired top tube, I found the seller responsive. There isn't a geo sheet, but the build sheet says that it was built for a six-foot tall rider, 88 PBH and 78 saddle height. I'm looking for a older Ram/Roadeo/Road Custom bike like that, but held off because off question marks regarding severity of dent, and that I am more interested in just the frame and possibly wheelset. He prefers to sell it whole.

I'll add my 2026 CL ad.

My friend Luis was wanting a slightly smaller Riv so I traded him my orange Sam for his blue Homer and it's up for sale as I'm working toward a different ride.

Complete bike $1500 or frame and fork , headset only  for $1000.

I too have had quite positive discussions with the Ashevilles seller. He was great with questions, is willing to ship, and was open to a facetime conversation.
Ultimately, the Romulus I picked up from Bill earlier this year is better geometry for me and already happily mine. If I hadn't picked that up, I'd be all over this custom.

I've definitely seen that Betty listed before and have been tempted.  Now the price is substantially lower, and I remain tempted.  I especially like the stock Rivendells modified to non-stock because I think they scare away the "collector/restorer" type of buyer and they sort of carry built in encouragement/permission to use it a ton, and not be precious about it, at least for me.  If I had the funds laying about and the slot to hang it...  Maybe it'll linger.

Here's a unique one for sale near Seattle. I (think) a Road size 63 made by Match. The serial is R80M, with a 63 stamped on opposite side of BB. Owner, Tom, is responsive. Says it has 25s because it's not one of those modern Rivs, but is unsure what would fit. He pulled a tape measure for me, but I'm not sure how accurate.
Seat tube- 22.5 inches
Saddle height in photo is 31.5 inches
top tube is 22.5 inches.

If the "horror" is the long stack of spacers, at least the new owner has plenty to work with and can cut them down. That's preferable then trying to add stack to a short cut steerer.

The sizing measurements didn't really make sense on the Legolas, but they did say it was "custom". A 17cm headtube doesn't jive with a 52.5 Seat tube unless the top tube slopes about 6deg (It looks horizontal) and the wheels are 650b or maybe its less slope and 26" wheels. Maybe seat tube is Center to center? I would double check how the measurements were made and ask what size the tires are.

About the horror, I looked again and I don't think I'd keep much of anything on that Legolas except frame, fork and brakes. Making it not such a good value. I also got around and looked at the Blue Ram and the sizing is clearly off. It looks more like a 60cm to me. It is certainly bigger than my 56cm Ram.

In case this helps anybody:
If I had to guess I'd say the Radivist Legolas is a 57 or maybe a 59 judging by the look of the headtube length. I don't know what "custom" meant in Rivendell speak. It was probably made to order, but I don't think Riv would have altered the dimensions from the chart below. Note that the Legolas had a higher bottom bracket, steeper seat angle, and less top tube slope than a typical 700c Riv.

I looked a little closer at the Blue Rambouillet on Radivist  from the same seller as the Legolas just out of curiosity. I didn't look that close before since I wasn't interested. Now on that bike, all the parts look like keepers. It's a nice classic Riv build, unlike the posted Legolas, and the owner would have been better off sizing up. He says it's a 58 cm and that looks like it could be right, but almost all the other information is wrong so I wouldn't trust that either. The Rambouillet wasn't a custom, in fact it was one of Rivs first overseas mass produced bikes, before that Grant had the Herons made by Waterford in smaller batches and before that with some overlap the Road, Long Lows, all-rounder and such that were made in the USA when ordered. The measurements also make no sense compared to the stated frame size or the looks of the bike and just add to the confusion rather than help in any way. Maybe AI was used in the generation of the post which would make me wary in general.

If the Ram is not a custom as claimed then likely there is nothing custom about the Legolas except the wacky parts. I do agree that the Rambouillet is an Iconic Rivendell Road Bike!

I found this picture on Tublr of a 60cm for visual comparison of the headtube size and why I thought it might be a 60cm:

Neither are "custom" as far as I know...Legolas was offered in limited quantities and made by Nobilette at the end of its run as a Rivendell production model. Yup...don't love the look of those wheels on the Legolas...
