Hi group,

I currently have 46cm Nitto noodle 177 bars with Shimano 105 shifters on my Sam Hillborne. I like everything except the ramp and hood reach is a little far away to comfortably brake. I'm looking for a different Nitto handlebar and it's a little confusing. I want a shorter ramp so when I move from the flats it moves quickly to the hoods. Does anyone have any knowledge of the dirt drop or rando bars? It would help if you know the model number. Looking for 26.0 X 44cm

I appreciate any feedback,

Bruce, San Diego

Bruce, the Hwy one bar from Soma Fab has 2 cm less reach than a Noodle and comes in silver and 26.0 clamp.

Mike, how is the quality of the Soma Hwy One compared to Nitto?

Thanks, Bruce

A friend of mine has the Mark's bar with Shimano shifters (Ultegra) and really likes it.  The difference between the Mark's bar and my Noodle is obvious when the bikes are together.  For the record, I like the long ramps on the Noodle, and sometimes rest my entire forearm there for a different position.  But, as they say - everyone's different.  Anyway, here's the Riv description, picture of comparison to Noodle, etc

The Hwy-1 bar is not up to Nitto standards for finish, stiffness and design.  It's more like a OEM bar you'd find on any new road bike. I tried it with Sram brifters and didn't like the sharp bend from the flats to the tops which seemed to dig into my palms.  I also thought the bend was too tight for cable routing...

I've never ridden one.  I know several people who are happy with them.  None of them thought the stiffness was any less than Nitto bars. The design is more in the modern trend for short ramps.

The combination of shimano sti levers, which have long hoods, and nitto noodle bars is not ideal. The hood length on non sti brake levers is much shorter - my guess would be about 1.5cm shorter.  Nitto noodles already have a long ramp. That, and the location of the curve make the noodle/sti match troublesome.  The shape of shimano's sti levers does not help the matter.  Try nitto bars with a shorter ramp and different curve profile. M176, M185, M186, and M195....  The 185 has a more traditional bend than some of the others.
Noodles have a reach of 96mm, if you move to a bar with a reach of around 80mm it should work better.

I recently went through this process, hence all the information. I opted to go with ritchey biomax bars.

Here is a link to someone's blog (not mine) that includes a pretty exhaustive list of Nitto handlebars and their information.  http://stuffdavelikes.wordpress.com/a-full-list-of-nitto-bars/

Cinelli 64 (the original dream bar) is very short reach and shallow drop.  But it's perfectly flat across the top.  You might want to look at this wider bar geometry chart since it shows many different bars with brifters in place, gives reach and drop when available  http://ruedatropical.com/2009/03/road-drop-bar-geometry/

Here's another resource on bars:

I have the Gran Bois randonneur bar on my Saluki with Ergopower brifters. I ride almost exclusively on the hoods, and it's worked fine for that, maybe because I don't know any better. I would like to find a bar that somehow reduces the distance between the brake lever and the bar when I'm in the drops, but still allows full movement of the levers. I think that may be impossible.

Isn't the Nitto 185 very close to the Cinelli 64? I used to ride 185s and "Giro d'Italias" exclusively, and I thought that the latter was another name for the 64.

(Just googled and it seems that the same bar goes by both names.)

At any rate, both of those I used were 90 mm reach and 140 mm drop: short indeed, but deeper than, say, the Maes reproductions that Compass sells (125 mm, IIRC -- and 115 mm reach).

I think that the 185 would do very well if you don't mind your bar ends tilted down; put them horizontal, as I prefer, and the ramp is pretty much non-existent. But with ends tilted down, the short ramp would complement long hoods.

And yes, an old 26.4 Cinelli fits just fine, thank you, in a steel Tioga "Dog Bone" 25.5 mm stem.

Rob,
Ergobrifters have a different shape than shimano STI. The Campi models are more forgiving of bar shape. You might be right about being leas sensitive though. The challenge comes when about one wants multiple hand positions.
SRAM levers have adjustable lever distance. Maybe that is a solution for you?

The Cinelli 64 is the Giro bar and you can buy them now in 26.0

I needed to shorten my reach to the bars due to a neck injury and the HWY 1 works great for me.  It shortens (with the same stem) my reach 3-4cm, compared to Noodles.  (I used to love the noodles for their roominess but in the last few years it became more of a bother than an advantage)

Steve.
