Cecily,

Planning on a Summer trip June 27th through July 16th and was planning on these destinations, Siskiyou Wilderness, PDX and Bay Area for the Riv rally. I wasn't planning on going that far North on this vacation but then things change.

You are damned fortunate to have all of that 4 miles away! I love my nearby bosque (the green, or at least greenish, belt lining the Rio Grande on both sides) but it's not like the LANF!

I think I may have ridden those trails 10+ years ago, when I visited my brother in LA.

Mr. Moore,

I am lucky. My paradigm regarding Los Angeles hasn't always included that short phrase. I was born here but spent a significant portion of my life North of San Francisco. I used to say I'd never live in L.A. add some expletives and that's about where I stood on the notion of living in this metropolis.

However, flash to 2002 and I found gainful employment in the city of angel's...then I moved to Sunland and have started exploring and found a paradise for cycling.

I think this is what is so fantastic about bicycles they help one to explore their surroundings with out a bubble. To experience life with nature at a reasonable pace.

Is LANF the Los Alamos National Forest? If so I've never spent any time in the Los Alamos National Forest. I have spent time in the Carson NF by foot in Northern New Mexico, but the Albuquerque region is unexplored by me. Is that the Sandia Mountain range to the East? That looks promising? Tell me more about the NF's in the area. I think we need to see some S240 pictures real soon from you Sir. So whet my appetite for a NM adventure!

Side note, Northern New Mexico is on my list of possible retirement locations...way back when I visited,  the wide open sky has never left me and it still invades my dreams.

It's a big planet out there, and once you adapt to living out of panniers, freedom expands to consume the available funds.  A lot can change, and 2 or 3 weeks of vacation time becomes a serious constraint.

Hugh, you forgot the "toot toot toot lookin' ....." part. ( CCR ref)

As always your photos are  well composed and meaningful.  Having spent my whole adult life not far from there it makes me miss the  fall/winter/spring rides in the San Gabriel's even more.  But when I remember summer I know why I moved to the coast.

Mike,

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah Summer is ah sweltering. My mind is already working on a slew of Summer location rides between August through early November. Either high up or coastal. We work with what we have. I'm not complaining till late August.

I've got a doosy S240 location planned near Los Angeles for Summer time. Your a good guesser what do you think I have up my sleeve?

Love CCR

Yeah Chris I'll go and buy where ever I feel like buying to include a unit next door to you and party 24/7.  And whether to visit ? PDX hasn't won that bid just yet. You folks will need to do better Seattle and Vancouver may get my patronage ;-)

I'll give you PDXers a little slack as you just finished up with a Mini-Snowgeddon. I expect less grumpy and less demands as Spring approaches.

Wonderfully composed and an enjoyable read.  Got me thinking about my own fortune in having a riding resource outside my back door (Although Gozales, McGonnigle, and Black Mountain have nowhere near the extent of Big Tijunga).

That in turn led to reading about Sunland-Tijunga history, the Tongva people, and a particular one named Juana Maria.  Never underestimate the power of your words.

Best regards,

Tom

Tom,

Thank you Sir. Ha! I've read about the founding Women of Tujunga/Sunland but lack a comprehensive understanding of the native people's of this area. I will remedy that.

I am more familiar with the La Jolla indian tribes of long ago and the Cahuilla Indian people's of the Palm Springs region, not to forget the Pomo's of Round Valley in Northern California, First Nation (Inuit) around and North of Vancouver B.C.and the Lummi Indian's of the Bellingham area. I have always identified with native people's view of their place on Earth.

Beginning In the 19th century Sunland/Tujunga was known as a therapeutic region for folks with Tuberculosis. We still have what they called sanitariums in the Sun Valley area,  though I think they call it something different nowadays.

Words are powerful...I do have to be careful though.

Hi Hugh,

I'm Ness and most of the bike advocacy community here in LA know me as grrlyrida. I still live in Silverlake and either ride my old Bridgestone mixte or my Rivendell mixte around LA and Pasadena. When I use to ride up to Sunland via Glen Oaks, I was using my go fast, aluminum/carbon Trek. I can't remember the last time I used it. Probably last fall.
