I've been on this Schwinn Cimarron kick for a time, and the madness continues... My latest Riv-inspired build I call "Sarge" (aka The Green Army Bike). It's a 1985 Cimarron mountain bike slightly converted for all-around/commuting/touring. The green Riv/Nitto handlebars MAKE this bike; these are my favorite handlebars of all time.
Related to several recent posts, I wanted to talk about the dynamo and lights I'm using. The hub is a SRAM iLight D7, which honestly I find to be virtually as good as my previously-owned Son hub, and any other Shimano dyno hubs I use. This was inexpensive, and it works flawlessly. I can't notice any drag, but then again I'm not as sensitive to these things... to me it rolls nice, and it works well... that's all I need.
The lights are Herrmans LED dynamo lights. The front light is comparable to, say a B&M Lumotec. It casts a nice light pattern, flicker isn't bad and it has a stoplight. It's not as bright as my Luxos, but for the $ it's a good light. The rear light, however... THAT is one amazing light. It's big, it's bright, and the standlight lasts at least 10 minutes. It fits nicely on my Racktime Addit rack, which protects the light in a recessed cove... nice feature. The front rack is a Blackburn Outpost, which unfortunately is an AWFUL, cheaply made, poorly bolted together rack... Not what I have come to expect from Blackburn. I have had to MacGuyver extra parts to stabilize this on the bike, and even so I have little confidence that this will hold together with any weight on it.. BIG disappointment; I will be replacing this with a real rack.
The fenders are SKS P65s (with nicely worn Sackville mudflaps!!). The tires are Nashbar Fuel MTB tires (with small knobbies)... I had to lose the rear chrome fender mount (that attaches to the seatstay bridge)... it was rubbing the tires and wasn't raising the fender enough... instead I ditched it, drilled holes and used a good ol' zip tie!! Works like a charm; no sense over-engineering the problem.
The crankset is a genuine Biopace (don't ask why, but I love these). The bell is a Spurcycle stainless bell with a nice shrill pinnngggggg.... The saddle is a Brooks Conquest... gorgeous, but lacking seatbag loops, prompting me to go with a temporary Jandd framepack to hold my pump and stuff. I have ordered a custom framepack from Ely Ruth Rodriguez (thanks to Bill Lindsay for the referral), and hopefully that will arrive within the next few months.
The Cimarron makes a great all-rounder, definitely with a Rivish vibe. BB
