Spent a lazy afternoon after the night of the annual Christmas party for "church people".  It's over, we are still married, and the house is intact.  So I spent the afternoon putting the wheels together.

Nothing spectacular here.

LX rear hub
LX dynamo front hub
Velo City Synergy rims, 32 hole.
Soma New Express 38 x 650B tyres.
Schwalbe tubes with those very cool clear end caps.
CS-HG61 12-32 cassette.

Just good stuff that will work well in the Riv tradition

Not shown, baby powder to seat new tyres and tubes.  Can of Coors beer consumed at end of endeavor.

More installments to come as Brown delivers and I find time to cobble.

Best,

Tom

PS:  In the zen of building, it occurred to me to call these rims "Velo City", not just velocity.

I'd probably call my bike shop Velo City.

Sam has sturdy, sure footed Schwalbe Marathons.  He will stay with that.  This is something new.

There is something about freshly, self built wheels that is truly satisfying! Congrats on the project!

Nice Wheels but……, if you can afford nice wheels, and you can afford a load of carbs…. you can afford a decent beer.

You mean you laced them yourself and everything?
Far out!

What width do they measure on those rims?

They are 26 mm.

26mm for that 38mm tire?

Michael,

My Xpress mounted on a 23mm Velocity rim measures just under 34mm with 55 psi. I was a bit disappointed. YMMV.

hsmitham,

You still have your Rumpkins to fall back on? Are you going to return the Xpress tires?

I am looking to try Hetres on my next set for my Sam in the spring.
But after trying 40mm Hetres, I think I will try something narrower. I don't think I need to go over 35mm wide for the riding I do. Just road riding.
But I want to keep it 32mm minimum for sure. I wouldn't want narrower than that.

Michael,

I personally won't do the Hetres again for this reason truthis I took them where they had no business. I used the Rumpkins this past weekend no flats! I love them off road...but they can feel dead on asphalt but still okay just build those cycling legs.

I think I'll  keep the Xpress and use them on my Hilsen for road rides and light dirt sections.

I got wind that Soma is developing a actual 42 mm slick tire but with two options 1.) Light weight version an 2.) A Riv/tour Stout casing version. I'll believe the width when it's mounted and calipered :-) I heard this from "Riv" a couple a weeks ago.

My mistake.  Synergies are actually 23 mm.

I plan to use the 23 mm rim/ 38 mm Soma tire combination for road riding.

Merry Christmas,

Tom
