As most of you caught, my beloved Father, James Robert Lindsay, died on October 4th, 2013.  Part of my recovery is being a smart-ass with people I like, like all of you.  Another part of my recovery and a tribute to my dear father is a restoration/conversion of his 1973 Windsor Carrera Sport.  I got a nice step underway over Thanksgiving.  My sis-in-law had room to deliver the wheelset from Southern California up to me.  I'm doing a 27-to-700 conversion.  I got the wheels taken apart and the hubs cleaned and polished.  I'm super excited about it.  I'll lace up the wheels tonight.

Pictures prove I'm working

Riv content:  I'm switching to Twin Hollows, Albatross bars, Tektro levers, and MKS Sneaker pedals from Riv.  I'll likely use silver longboards as well.  The Brooks B17 I add and the 700x35 Paselas are definitely Rivish on this lugged steel MINA frameset (Made in North America).

The hubs look great, Bill.  Nice job.

Terrific idea.  Bike will be restored and there is a therapeutic and contemplative exercise for the worker.  Win-win.

Good luck,

-jb

Dearest Bill,

This is rough.  You have a lot to deal with.   The pain never really goes to zero.  Only asymptomatic  to zero.  Those of us who have experienced the final loss of both parents feel tis keenly.

Restoring this bicycle sounds like a really good thing to do.

Do allow yourself the mourning.  It is part of the process and you need to let it take its measure.

No worries Bill. We all have to keep our brains somewhere, and like you I prefer to sit on mine. In my case they seem more protected that way. Grin. Enjoy remembering your Father! You and your family remain in my prayers.

Perfect project.  I read "restoration" in the subject line and imagined a bike restored to completely original parts and configuration.  But I see you have a wonderful plan for a bike project that includes restoration of the soul.  Just perfect.  Please keep us updated.

You are right, it's a conversion, or a resurrection.  Mainly it's going back into active duty.  One of the things my father was all about was repurposing.  He was a bit of a "keeper" if not quite a "hoarder".  "I'm sure that'll be good for something".  So I can easily envision him smiling when I take his old bike and do what I love, rebuilding and repurposing it to a daily commuter that'll be with me daily.

Bill:  Nice start; beautiful hubs!  Nothing like bringing back the lustre to rusted metal...  Considering a 27 to 700 conversion on my Fuji TS IV, so curious to see how well this works for you.  Keep pics coming... good luck. BB

I misread this as "it's a conversation, or a resurrection..." which struck me as correct too. Enjoy many more years of conversation with your father through the sacramental of his bicycle.

Conversation and sacramental.  I'm using those from this point forward to describe the project.  Thanks for that.

I did not catch Bill, but I know from some of your photo comments that you spent many hours tinkering with dad. May those thoughts stay fresh forever.

The conversation continues.  I was in Southern California for Christmas and picked up the rest of my Pop's Windsor Carrera Sport.  I'm full into the work now.  I've stripped everything down, and have done a bit of a clean up on the frameset, headset, and tonight I polished up the stem.  There's a ton of photos in the same link above, but here it is again:

Lots of pics

You'll have to scroll to the end to see what's happened most recently.  Here's the stem for those smart ones that don't want to slog through lots of photos:

Bill,

Great project, thanks for sharing both the bike and personal side of it here. It looks like your work will turn into a great bike and important symbol.

The couple times I've started trying to polish chrome or aluminum bits I usually give up before the sheen you put on those hubs... Is it just elbow grease or do you have a good method to share?

I read a nice tutorial on the 'net, but it's really not complicated.  I'll describe the process for the stem.  The stem had an unfinished forging parting line on the underside of the extension, so step one was some file work.  I knocked down the parting line and hit any significant nicks or notches.  Step two was to Easy-Off it for about 90 seconds.  Just coat the thing with easy off and let it sit.  This gives you a good head start with anodization.  Then wet sand everything with 400 grit paper, until it looks uniformly scratchy everywhere.  Then go again with 600, 1200 and finally 2000.  Then polish with a little Simichrome polish and lots of clean cotton balls.  Bob's your mothers brother!

Bill,  thanks for the tutorial!  That progressive wet sanding must be the missing link as I was trying to go just w/ chemicals and regular cloth's.  Fun project!

Ahhh, caustic soda!!! Gotta love that stuff.  (I used the straight 100% lye, which is the nastiest of all, and for which I make my kids keep outside a 2-block radius from the house)..  Nothing like transforming a rusty, desperate-looking part into a gleaming component. That's gonna look stunning when complete... Good stuff!!!

When you're done you end up with a polished, unanodized aluminum stem,
right? This then would be subject to tarnishing and discoloration. If
you don't have a favorite way to do so, let me suggest my "Tried and
Liked 2013" selection, Blue Magic aluminum polish.

I have to confess that The Grateful Dead are my cup of tea to a similar extent that orange mixtes are Patrick Moore's.  That is to say, not my cup of tea.  His playful yet dismissive mocking of "hipsters" closely resembles my own playful and dismissive mocking of "jerry bears".  FACT!

I am sorry for your loss Bill. That is a nice way to honor the memory of your father and, if i may say, very true of you.I hope you have had the time to make amends with him for the big or small things that happen, occasionally, and we regret afterwards. I wish you a fruitful and soothing outcome on your project.

BTW, after I sent it, I had an anxiety attack thinking that a reader might find a message in the song title (friend of the devil). I assure one and all that it was simply the GD music I meant to pass on (I'd been listening, seriatim, to Uncle John's Band, Whiskey in the Jar  -- the best version!; and then Friend of the Devil).

I never heard of jerry bears until just now.

I can lend you a few Jerry Garcia ties to wear over your T shirt; they are actually quite tasteful and businesslike, to my eyes, while avoiding the dreary blandness of so many business ties. I've saved them for the looks and not only for the brand name, even though I wear a tie perhaps once a year.

My wife worked on producing those Jerry Garcia ties, many years ago. They are actually quite nice.
