Hey all,

As I approach another bike joining the fleet(more on that later...), wondering what bike racks/stands y'all have had good experiences with? For context My wife and I live in a smaller house and I try to store our bikes inside.

We've got 2 straight top tube bikes and an incoming bike with a step through frame.

Just wondering what racks/wall mounts/stands those of you who store bikes in your homes/apartments have had good experiences with?

Open to anything so long as they get our bikes up off the ground and keep things organized!

Thanks for any insight!

- Drew

I use the Delta Cycles Michelangelo. Holds great for me. The plastic/rubber stuff on the grips starts to break off, but nothing that some bar tape can’t take care of.

I use a Feedback Sports Velo Cache 2 Bike Rack. The tripod feet are very secure for a couple of big Rivs. It definitely helps to put the bikes up and away from the floor in a small space.

I’ve got hook storage room for 5 bikes in my small garage (tho’ currently I have only 3, or perhaps 3 1/2, and tend to put them in floor stands) with inexpensive hooks screwed into a thickish plank itself bolted to the studs. I have a large sheet of masonite protecting the wall from tire marks.

I spaced the hooks so that there is room for at least 42 cm bars to just clear each other.

With bikes hanging from the wall hooks I can get 2 compact cars into the garage if I’m careful, tho’ I have only 1 car.

My neighbor to the west manages to hang something like 7 bikes around and over his 2 Priuses into his identical garage but they’re not nearly as easy to get to.

Obligatory bad photo attached.

Someone mentioned rubber protective sleeves breaking up. I replaced those on my hooks with sections of a cheap discarded garden hose in vivid green, which are much stronger.

I sort of forgot one of my main points re: storing bikes inside a house. In a 1-bedroom apartment 20 years ago I used the dining area for bike storage and a similar wall-hook arrangement stored 5 or 6 bikes at the time with very economical use of space.

In order to give suggestions, it would be helpful if you shared where you were thinking the bikes could be stored.  for example if you dont have a lot of wall space, then hanging racks won't work.  if you dont have the ceiling height then bike over bikes wont work.

Thanks everyone! Great options!

Minh - I’ve got roughly 8 foot ceilings and mostly thinking about wall mounting them in a spare room/office so they’re up off the ground. Just wondering what products people have had good experiences with. My wife’s Schwinn Crosscut and my Appa will likely be up off the ground and I’ll park the new Step through separately/in front of them.

CycleDeal 1 bike stand - Amazon $50. Minimum space required. Stores bike vertically off ground. Stable. Works with step through frames.
CycleDeal 2 bike stand - Amazon $80. Stores 2 bikes stacked horizontally. Again, minimum space, close to wall. Designed for diamond frames. Stable. Can adjust for space between bikes.

In my basement I ran a 2x4 across the wall at a height that allows bikes to hang from hooks as shown here. If I cared about protecting the wall surface below I'd mount a board or some other material. I alternate directions to fit them all in a small space.

Like Ted, I've got a 2x4 and rubber-coated bike hooks in my workshop. This works well for me and is very inexpensive. More cash for cool bike parts!

I have two bike stands whose names/brands unfortunately I don't remember. Each holds two bikes, in a different style.  Neither of them needs to be nailed or bolted to a wall, but one stands up on a tripod-like support and the other extends between the ceiling and the floor. In one of them, the bikes hang parallel to the wall, by their top tubes, one above the other.  I had to adjust the mounting hardware for one bike when I acquired a new bike with a sloping top tube, but it was easy.  The other holds two bike with the wheels facing the wall, with a hook for the front wheel and a support/bracket the catches the rear wheel and keeps it from hitting the wall. Bikes obviously stick out farther into the room on the second one but take up more wall space on the first one.  Lots of design decisions available.  Could get photos and/or try to find brand names if desired, but the racks are several years old so same brands might not be available anyhow.

+1 for the inexpensive hardware store hooks. However if you have the misfortune to store a bike with hydraulic brakes- keep it horizontalish.

Hi Drew — More options discussed here in this 2021/2022 thread on the same topic:

Thanks Eric!

I figured this was a topic that’d been covered at least once before. I went ahead and ordered one of the delta cycle rugged racks that seem to have good reviews.

If nothing else I’ll have 2 bikes off the ground and the repair stand for the 3rd if I’m wrenching.

Thanks everyone!

I went with this sliding hook setup. It works great for my needs. I can store bikes pretty dang close together, and then just slide them apart to select the one that I want to get down. I took the idea from this YouTube video https://youtu.be/_deob4L4AEY?si=7LjU7jVJMlieOWAK and followed his instructions with a few slight mods given the hardware that I had access to at the local store. Since seeing this video, I know that a few companies have ripped off his idea and sold the rolling hooks, and they still do. Gearblocks is one of them. https://gear-blocks.com. Using their rolling hooks may be the easiest way to go but I did mine based on the video before the idea was implemented by any companies.

This pic is in our garage which is insulated and drywall finished as you can see.

Dang Josh, That Gus, Atlantis, Hunq, Custom(?) combo is impressive!

Picked up the Delta rugged rack today and going to do some reworking of our sunroom/guestroom to make our storage/working space more usable.

If nothing else, love that this convo has me seeing all the stables and the beautiful Rivs you've all got!

I have the "ProSlat" system which I've mounted in a small storage room in our apartment.  The bike hook slots in at various elevations and can slide side to side before being secured, so you can adjust each bike to make sure the handlebars etc play nice together.  I'm very happy with the system - also a variety of other attachments for all sorts of stuff.  I have simple hooks as well for my helmet, voile straps, etc. I have three bikes in a tiny 3.5' x 5' room with a standard interior door and while snug, it works great.

Can we see a photo Jason?

I’m about to begin converting a garage into a dedicated bike space, so all inspiration in this regard is most welcome!

Hey Josh,
I don't find your collection of rivs to be excessive! In fact, I have the same Altantis, Gus, Hunq, AR (not custom) combo myself! They all scratch a different itch, as you would probably agree.

Best,
IY

PW - here you go, it's a mess in there!!  These are at different points in time..

With one bike removed, to show the various attachment options:

And when I briefly tried four bikes; it was too squished, I'd scratch up the bikes trying to get them out
