Specifically as opposed to the LL Bean chamois shirt... I've grown up with and still wear my LL Bean shirt in a dark green color.  It's my favorite shirt from Sep-Apr.  Riv's offering is tempting and even the right color, but I'm skeptical whether I'd see enough of a difference especially w/ the 3x bill.  I know it is supposed to compare against the Filson version not Bean but the Bean chamois is what I know (and already love!).

Well the current price on the LLBean is $50 so we should at least be fair and say that the Riv shirt is only 1.88x the bill.  :-P

For me, the pencil slot in the pocket and the red thread of the buttons more than make up for the difference to me, but I don't have a longstanding relationship with the Bean product.

Great point Bill, I'm stuck with the price I paid for the Bean shirt about 15 years ago and they've definitely gone up! (They also replaced it 3 years ago due to a button tearing out and taking some fabric with it)

That red thread is pretty sweet looking, I'm wondering if there is a difference in fabric weight/feel.

I have both. The Bean is nice and what I think of as chamois. The Riv is far more rugged and feels like it would ward off errant chain saws (that's a compliment, just to clarify). The Riv is warmer, and the color is great, too. I expect the Riv will outlast the Bean by a significant factor.

I love the Riv (but don't have the Bean to compare). The fabric feels nice, and it does feel rugged. Word of caution on the buttons-- a few (3 or 4... maybe 5?) on my chambray and cowpoke have fallen off. I've got 'em in my drawer waiting for a time to re-stitch 'em. I do like the red thread, though.

Jim, Shoji,

That's what I was hoping to hear, not surprising of course.  I think it'll be #1 on my tax return dependent splurge list... (At which time my size will be unavailable:) )

The Riv moleskin shirt is outstanding. I have USA made older chamois shirts from cabela & woolrich that I love but there's not much comparison between their fabric and the Riv fabric. The moleskin is a very tight dense weave that is noticeably wind resistant . It's been a real addition to my winter wear. Erin and I both have one and have been wearing them a few times a week. Color is deep and rich. I wore mine today over a wool base layer and under a wool Filson vest. it was 8 below when I walked the dog with a brisk 20 knot wind. It was a perfect layer under a down sweater and cotton anorak. If you trust Riv on shirts as we do, get one. Can't wait for the return of the seersucker!

They had just come in last time I was in the shop.  They were still trying to figure out what to price them at.  As a person who grew up in northeastern Ohio in LL Bean chamois, these were MUCH nicer.  I thought they felt thicker and softer.  I agreed with Bill that the pocket design and the red thread on the buttons gave it a distinct look.  Plus I've always been fond of the MUSA tags.  I was tempted to be one of the first people to buy one but recent house issues will be keeping me in Carhartt irregulars for a while.

When you amortize the price difference (Bean v. Riv) over 15 years you'll have to give up maybe one cup of Starbux Frou Frou per year. I can easily live with such a sacrifice to get a better shirt.

Dear Justin,

For a size medium: Long arms, short tail (won't stay tucked, and was designed that way), pretty big in the body, fairly broad radius on the collar points (peter-pan-ish), red button thread.

I wear a 15 1/2 X 34" dress shirt, and the medium is a good fit in the arms, short in the tails (I think it would benefit a lot from longer tails), and pretty loose in the body.

Great fabric, lovely color, unfortunate oddities in the design that'll prevent me from wearing it to the office. The fabric and construction quality doesn't need quirky flair to differentiate it from other shirts.

Best Regards,

Will

P.S. If Rivendell wants to build bikey clothing (they've done some good stuff in the past, and they used to claim their long arms on shirts were for that purpose), I'd vote for the three-pocked derby sweater (that was a design classic, and I'd still be wearing mine if Woolistic hadn't lost it when it went in for moth hole repair), their Ktena 3-pocket summerweight jersey in a mossy green color like the Wooly Warm jersey (I wore the black one they made for a nano-minute until it was threadbare), and their colored armwarmers. The mustard-yellow ones were a perfect contrast with the green jersey, and easy to find in a pack while on the move.

Best Regards,

Will

Will,
+1 on the mustard yellow arm warmers.
I still have a pair of those, they are great!

I was lucky to get an as-new one in a perfect fit for sale used at a very, very low price and it is one of my favorite winter cycling garments -- an ideal 2nd layer for 40F or below.
