I finally polished up my new, and a little unusual, single speed Bombadil build, which rides on Ghisallo wooden rims and Hetres.  Here’s the build list:

56 cm Bomba f/f in a sort of blue/green

Peter Weigle-modified Campy front hub, White DOS Eno rear hub

Ghisallo beechwod rims

Cream Hetres

Stronglight 49D crank arms

Bespoke Chainrings “Solida Cats” 44 tooth chainring

Phil Wood pedals

Nitto Lugged seatpost

Brooks B-17 Select

Nitto Bullmoose bars

Brooks Plump grips

Paul Canti Levers

Bruce Gordon cantis, with cork pads installed to accommodate the wooden rims

Here’s a glam shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194350253/

And for those interested in some of the details, here’s a link to the full set:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157637736975573/

And here’s the kicker, and a sorry confirmation of my addiction to tinkering:  This is probably a temporary build – I’m pretty sure this frame is heading to Bilenky in a month or two for an S&S retrofit and respray, in which case most of the components of this build will move over to my Wilbury.

Quick ride report on the inaugural ride to follow.

That bike looks fantastic.  And those wheels will look glorious on a Wilbury, too.  What color is the Wilbury?

Are you having the whole bike re-sprayed a new color, or just retouching the installation scars from the frame couplers?

I was wondering if the third tube on the frame would be new ground for Bilenky, but they've put S&S couplers on many a triple tube tandem, and probably even more off-beat frames.

That's a heck of an entry into the 'one bike to rule them all' discussion. Any comments on the BG Canti's? I think they look great and I've been keeping them in the back of my head as a potential splurge...

Congrats on getting her rolling again!

How was the front hub modified? I presume drillium conversion?

They look like the set I bought from Peter a few years back.  Peter takes '60s era Gran Compes which were designed only with the larger holes and drills the smaller holes then polishes so they come out similar to Record hubs.

Well I'll be danged. I have that fabulous Berthoud bag/rack, and never thought of hanging lights from those loops. Nice!

Fantastic.

You description of kindling smells from braking certainly best those of smoldering CF resin from tandems amongst us at our last ride of the Hilly Hundred. You think your brakes force some compromise of things, theirs (in several cases) blew tires off rims at stop signs at the bottom of big hills that crossed highways!

Looks like a fantastic day too.

The Bruce Gordon brakes adjust the same as the Paul Neo-Retros and Touring Cantis (which I find extremely easy to set up, once you understand their concept), which is great. The appearance is stunning, if you like the look, which I clearly do (I put these brakes on my SimpleOne, now passed on to my son in D.C., and this bike). The design and finish are flawless, to me. The only disadvantage I can think of is the $$$, which aren't insignificant. But I like supporting folks like Bruce (and for that matter Paul, too).

The Wilbury is dark green – I briefly stuck the wheelset in it, and it looks great.  Here’s a pic, but it doesn’t show the color very well.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8119883720/in/set-72157631845152497   This one, without wheels, is better.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8067478952/in/set-72157631845152497/

I’m going to get the Bomba a full repaint.  I’ve been talking to the guys at Bilenky about whether there’s any way to make clear powdercoat as durable as colored.

The rack and bag were just sitting around, waiting for the right home, and I think they found it!

Thanks for the follow up on the BG Canti's... they are pretty sweet looking.  I'm weighing the 'rightness' of selling an old (too small) Bridgestone MB4 in order to fund fancy brakes on another bike! :)

Sigh, **ALL** of Tom's builds make me want to go back and re-do my own.  That Berthoud bag looks nowhere near as nice on my QB as it does on this Bomba!
