Forgive the cross post from 650b... since it's for the Bomba I figure it's fair to share.  By the velocity description it seems like this is a very Riv-ish rim and the price from Velocity is just about the same as the Atlas which Riv is selling.

I'm thinking about a new wheelset for my Bombadil, aimed at Schwable Nobby Nic's (2.25), Furious Fred's (2.1) or possibly the 48mm Compass EL tires at some point.  I like Velocity rims and have used the synergy, dyad and A23 to date.  Only the early edition synergy's have given me any grief and I particularly liked a 700c wheelset I built up w/ the Dyads.  Anyway... I was perusing velocity's site and saw these big honkin Cliffhanger rims;

I'm deciding between these and the Atlas, Synergy or 650B Dyad's... oh and I'm only going for 36H rims which is why I grugingly passed on all those great deals on the Pacenti rims recently.  I need rim brake compatibility due to the Bombadil/Saluki bikes but I'll be throwing 6 bolt disc capable hubs in them (shimano deore level) in case I ever take the opportunity to dabble in those waters... :)

Any thoughts?

The Cliffhanger seems like a great rim for a Bomba.  They're 5 mm wider than the Atlas or A23, and not much heavier.

The 2.1 Thunder Burt would be a good tire to try as well.  They're in-between the Schwalbe knobbies and the Compass tires you referenced, as far as speed and traction.

Thunder Burt 2.25" or 2.1", tubeless ready.  The Cliffhanger rims seem to be tubeless-ready as well.

Atlas rims are not tubeless ready right?

My only complaint about Velocity rims is that you can't really tell which rim is for what. They all seem to be for touring/trekking/offroad/on-road whatever.

For example the Atlas is listed in Road, Touring, Cross. Others are listed in multiple categories too. The Cliffhanger is in Mountain and Touring but so is the Dyad and the Chukker.

I went with Atlas 32 hole 650b for my city/gravel/overnighter bike but honestly I have no idea why.

I meant to type Thunder Burt vice Furious Fred... getting my funny schwable names mixed up!

Tim that's exactly what I was thinking, for rough stuff loaded/unloaded, rider weighing around 200lbs seems like the beefier (and wider) the better.

They seem to overlap a bit, but I think most rims can have multiple applications.

Tony, I would go Cliff Hangers if I were you. Would widen out the tires more and be more plush. If I could fit Hans Dampfs in the frame, it would be all the suspension I needed.
