I found myself on the trail today wondering about a slightly more narrow bar for my 48cm Hunqapillar. No real reason other than I found myself scooting my hands inward, I'm more used to drop bars on a road bike.

Curious to who on here has cut theirs and to what width? Does anyone wish they hadn't cut it? Was there a 61cm option at some point?

How tall are you?

I would slide you grips and controls in a half inch at a time. Try it out and if you like it, get the hacksaw/pipe cutter out and trim it down. Repeat till you find your happy spot!

I have the Bullmoose bars on my Hunqapillar and love them. My are full width, but I'm also 6'3" and I like wider bars.

Have you tried Albastache bars? The curve position is narrower and the upright position wider. I ride 80% of the time in the curves, 100% of the single track in the curves. They are road bars, so require a stem/brake/possibly shifter change in diameter. I love mine, though the bullmoose were next on my list to try. I've just no reason to continue down the list. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Yes, I actually had albatross on these for a while and loved them. However I ended up stealing them for a hillborne build and wanted to try out the bullmoose so bought those and put em on. I like the bullmoose bars so far. Just curious if bars can be 'too wide' and if they should be dialed down a notch for better leverage or control, or leave them wide. and if bike size matters to bar width. I'm 5'7 per the other comment.

Don't cut them. ;-). By today's MTB standards the bars are already narrow.

Move break levers inward so you can just reach them with your index finger from the end of the grip and tape up the rest.

I use the full length of my bars.

The width is great for descending (and climbing) but make sure you adjust your arms to an elbows out position. Will give lots of control and absorb shocks better.

I'd sooner neuter a moose than trim a perfect set of Nitto Bullmoose bars... Although admittedly I have been guilty in the past of component mutilations too hideous to reveal to this forum... But I have atoned and reformed.

Thanks! My hand position is pretty locked in with the Ervin grips, maybe I'll move to bar wrap for a while which gives me area to play with and see how I like it.

I am a huge fan of ESI grips.

I hate ergo grips as they lock in my hands (as you say) and prevent me from rotating them around the bar.

I have a set of bullmoose bars as the alternative cockpit for my Bombadil.  I haven't used that cockpit in a long time, but when I did, I did a multi-layer bar-tape thing and moved the controls pretty far in to where I felt right.  I did NOT chop off the ends, but I could have removed 1.5 inches off each end, maybe more.  Now that I have a dedicated albatross bike and a dedicated bosco bike, maybe those bullmooses won't feel so crazy wide anymore.  Next bike stand project!
