Okay were already into mid January and I know I need to get one in before the end of the month. I've polled the usual suspects and it appears that the 24th & 25th is going to be the best time. So here's the plan:

Take the Metrolink train to the Vincent Grade Acton station and ride out and up Angeles Forest Springs Rd to Mill Creek Summit. I will need to make a call to the ranger district and inquiry about water at the Summit. From MCS continue on and up Mount Gleason Road skirting the flank of Mount Gleason (we can stash our bikes and hike the 600' to the summit) and make a stealth camp either around Lighting Point or Messenger Flats camps. Mike S. said that MF's was closed but I'm into stealthing it anyhow. This is approximately a 2500' to 3000' climb all pavement for about 25 miles +- 2 miles. Doug P. and I did this ride last May and this is a pleasant ride.

Following day will be the long mileage day approximately 35 miles back down Santa Clara Divide Rd(broken pavement rough stuff so this is where you'll want ideally 42 mm tires with a good casing I'll be running Rumpkins) to Sand Canyon "Bear Divide" climb up to Dillon Divide and Little Tujunga Rd back down to Foothill. There's a Restaurant at the intersection, so I'll check the schedule and post the menu a bit later hoping for beer too.

For any out of town Riv folk like the San Diego contingent this will need to be determined.

The early train gets to Acton at 8:10 am though that's pretty early it would be ideal due to short days. Suggestions as usual are welcome. Everyone is responsible for their meals.

We'll of course do a weather check and make a call for the 31st if we have a freak Chinook  but I'm confident that'll it'll be a go.

Correction: On the stash the bike part I want to make it clear I was proposing a hike to the summit for the sake of a summit then come back down and find our camp site.

Count me in.  Looks like the train can put me at Union station at about 9 am.  That might be a late arrival for the adventure as then I would need to hop on the Metro Link.  Maybe the San Diego folks could car pool.

Curtis, there is a Metrolink out of Oceanside that gets to Union Station at 640am... 10 min late for the right train north.  I want to go and will carpool if I get over this Sinus infection I have in time.

Hugh, it's an easy bike ride to the summit of Gleason from the road.  As far as Messenger Flats, most of that area survived the Station Fire, but from what I've heard it's being used even if the Forest Service lists it as closed.

Hi Mike,

I am all about car pooling and/or traveling together.  I hope you get well soon.

I'll seemingly need to skip a class that meets 4-6, but WTH.

Mike,

Thanks for that information...because of the lack of water it would be difficult to properly douse a fire before going to sleep. On our stay at Upper Santa Ynez I didn't think to douse the fire before sleep.Mike could you make the inquiry into water at MCS. If there was water there it would help considerably.

Fellows I know this would be a really early day for both of you but why not park a car at my house and we'll ride the 8.5 miles to the station. It's all downhill. This way you make Saturday a bit easier.

Remember Doug there will be the Hike a Bike on the edge of the Los Padres in February and this time hot springs are on the menu with an epic 30+mile downhill section down to Ventura.
