I wanted to let you fine folks know how happy I am with my 59cm Rivendell Rodeo. I purchased it from Don Compton right here on the RBW Owners Bunch. I didn't want to change much from the bike because it was so beautiful to look at and ride.It was all Campy 10 speed Chorus and Centaur with Record hubs etc... But I live on a hill and needed gearing to get me up them. I changed the 53/39 cranset and BB to a White Industries BB & VBC 44/28 since my cassette is 13/27. Works flawless. After numerous trials with tires and handlebars I realized the bike is just a little too big for me. A very short stem didn't really solve the problem. I know many cyclists would never consider using Nitto Aluminum Albatross handlebars on a Rivendell Rodeo but that's exactly what I did. I purchased some Campagnolo Veloce flatbar 10 speed shifter/levers and it's sucha joy to ride. The perfect mix of speed and comfort. The Compass Stampede Pass 32mm tires, Brooks Cambium C17, VP-001 pedals and Ergon grips all compliment the bike the way I like. For most of my riding in San Diego, this is the bike of my choice. I've even ridden single-track off-road when using Compass Barlow Pass 38mm tires and it was an amazing experience. I can really go almost anywhere. I'm even thinking of installing my Nitto Hub Area Racks and bags to see how it handles for a lower weight S240.

Cheers,

Bruce in San Diego

I, for one, heartily approve of this build.  I'm a big proponent of "high performance uprights" or "high quality casual."

My own Quickbeam is built up similarly, with swept back bars, ergon grips, and lightweight rims + tires, albeit with a fixed gear instead of the 10spd road drivetrain.

Bruce,
I am glad you like the bike. I missed that bike so much that I ordered another Roadeo frame set ( same size ).
It says something about the Roadeo's neutral handling that the bike can feel so good in two different setups.
Now, go out and ride the heck out of it.
Don

I really like your Roadeo and the build.  There was a Roadeo with flat bars on the Rivendell Blug a while back.  The bars might have been MAP's instead of Albatross'.

A high performance road bike with flat bars?  Horrors, what would some of the other forums dedicated to road bikes think?

That's the nice thing about this group.  The responses are positive and helpful, in recognition of how versatile a Rivendell bike really is.

Yeah it's a more versatile bike than I originally thought. I forgot that I can ride it all day long and all I want to do.

Thanks for the feedback, Bruce

Nice build Bruce.

I've ridden the bike and it's quick, nimble and highly responsive. I also rode it in it's other iteration and it was fantastic, though with the upright configuration the comfort level is extraordinary. No rules, just do what feels right.

Damn that is nice.  Smart gearing too.  Love it.

I may need some VBC rings... that looks like a brilliant gearing setup, and a beautiful bike. It looks like it can fly!

Hi Bruce, I have a question about those Campagnolo flat bar shifters - - specifically, can you share your thoughts on how they work with the front derailleur shifts?.  Can you trim the front derailleur?

Or is the front shift a "big click," like the Shimanos?

I love the build you did, and would like to try flat bars + Campagnolo flat bar shifters on a couple bikes (including a  Roadeo), but I'm not sure how the front derailleur would work with my triples and wide range doubles.

That's a great color for your Roadeo, and a nice build.  Mine's a 2010, and also has a Campagnolo drive train, hence my interest in your flat bar shifters.  Pix here:

Hi Max,

Thanks so much for the positive feedback. I like your color Rodeo better. That's my favorite and have seen it on a few of the Hunq's- stunning. I'll be honest, the only reason I went to Albatross handlebars is because the 59cm frame is just a little too big for me.I wouldn't go through this if it was my perfect size bike. I think a 57cm would be the best fit for me and I might get one some day. After trying out so many different quill stems/drop handlebar reach combinations the bike still looked strange and handled a bit funny with the short 50mm stem. I really like Nitto Albatross on my Sam Hillborne and I had a set of heat-treated aluminum laying around so I thought I would give it a try. Campy only makes 2 shifters for flat bars- bar ends or time trial shifters or the ones I opted for which are 10 speed Veloce with integrated brake levers. BTW, the braking with these is far, far superior to the road brifters no question. The front shifter does not trim- it's more like exact Shimano click. But it shifts perfect and better than the road Chorus version. You can run triple or double. Mine is set for double. I have a White Industries VBC crankset 44 outer/28 inner so it's wide/low compact. I set up the brake cables but took it to my LBS to have the shifter cables installed. I purchased the Campy 10 speed Veloce flat bar shifter/brake lever combination from Ribble in the UK. They were $131 with shipping and no tax and included both sets of cables and housing. Not a bad deal and too about 1 week to arrive here in San Diego. I hope I was able to answer your questions. Again, I wouldn't go this route if the bike fit me properly. I sometimes miss getting in the drops in a road bar when I want to spring up hills or decent a hill. I sometimes pack this bike in the back of my Honda Accord to take on a business trip. With road bars it fit perfect but with Albatross I have to take the quill stem off and on which is somewhat of a pain- the Alba's are just too wide to fit in the trunk when on the bike.

Cheers,

Bruce

I installed the Nitto Hub Area Racks and the Sackville Hub Area Bags just for the heck of it. I used P-clamps on the mid fork and it works perfect. Rides amazing with a small load. I could easily take this bike overnight camping. I think it really shows how versatile Rivendell's are- even the Rodeo.

Cheers, Bruce

I apologize to all for my last responsive post, which had a lot of junk/forwarding/crap attached to my e-signature.  I had meant to reply solely to OP (Bruce), but screwed up and replied to list.

sorry!
