Anyone have thoughts about using a Dirt Drop stem paired with some Noodle handlebars on an Atlantis?

Pros? Cons?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

My Atlantis came with that set up. I don't think there is anything wrong with the pairing, especially if you want the bars up and back. I think it especially helps if you like to use the drops without being so deep on the bike. Some would see it as an odd aesthetic, but I like the DD with about any bar. I'd say it's necessary with moustache. In the end, if it allows you get comfortable on the bike with a bar you prefer it's all good.

Personally I could never get comfortable with noodles regardless of stem. My issues were with the shape of the bar not the position. One thing that also was an issue was the cable routing done by the PO. They ran the barend cables under the wrap along with the brake cables and made the shifting super sluggish. I ended up swapping to an albatross set up that I really like.

Do you have any recommendation about length of the Dirt Drop stem?

I have no clue which one to use.

I actually quite like the look of the dirt drop with most bars other than full uprights. Something sorta badass about it. I have the 8cm on my hunq with albastache. I can't imagine going longer, but the top tube on the hunqapillar is quite long. Not sure how it compares to the Atlantis top tube. I think the 8cm extends 6cm and the 10 extends 8... If that helps.

To me the Dirt Drop is to bring you up and back. The DD I purchased was specifically for the mustache bar so I went 8. I would much rather err being a little more upright, than a little too stretched out. If you were trying to fit a bike slightly too small for you or with a short head tube then the 100 might be the thing. Your goals with the swap should point towards one or the other.

Not the greatest angle, but here is my Atlantis in it's previous dirty dropped noodleness.

I've never drop-bar'd an Atlantis, but I've drop-bar'd many other bikes typically not drop-bar'd, and the DD stem is a wonderful instrument for that end.

My favorite (he repeated hisself endlessly) was the very early '90s DB Axis Team with the head cut off almost flush with the tt. After conferring with Riv, I bought a 10 cm DD stem to hold the 46 cm Noodle, and the ride, despite my predilection for a shoved-back saddle and the (by road bike standards) unnaturally long top tube, the DD got the bar in a very comfortable place with at least 4" of quill to spare. Remember that, as you raise the bar, it comes back at you.

The final setup was quite comfortable-- and note again: there was much quill to spare.

IMO, the Atlantis is a natural for a drop bar -- go for it!

Well I'm thinking a 58cm Atlantis might just be a tad bit too long for me in the top tube.

But I wanted to pair it with an 8cm Dirt Drop stem, hopefully it'll work!

Thanks!!

Pros -  If you run the bars 2 or more inches above seat height, I think the Dirt Drops help disguise the extra long quill since it pivots approximately midway.  Seems to break things up ... to my eye anyway.   Put some stem shifters and/or a brass bell on the quill and that tall neck will virtually disappear.  Personally, I think the Dirt Drop looks far superior to a super tall Tallux with a short reach.  Another pro is the Dirt Drop is stronger and less expensive than the Tallux.

Keep in mind mountain handlebars and road bars have different dimensions.  One requires 25.4 stem and the other 26.0.  Be sure to get the larger so that rather than having to purchase another stem to switch between the two, you can simply purchase a $5 shim.

I've been trying to find the right bar/stem combo since I bought a 56 Atlantis months ago.  Recently I tried an 8cm dirt drop plus Grand Bois Randonneur bars and it seems just right for me. As others have said, you shouldn't have any qualms about putting a dirt drop on an Atlantis (or any bike for that matter).  It's a great stem.

Here's a pic. No bar tape yet, but that's because I'm afraid of commitment.

The angle of the photo makes the bars look higher than they are. They are slightly above or even with saddle height and super comfortable (on short test rides so far - excited to try it on an extended ride soon!).

Good luck!

I have a 10 cm DD and 46 noodles on my 56 Samuel Hillborne. I have the stem raised about an inch, which puts the bars exiting the stem about an inch above the nose of my saddle. I I was supposed to get an 8 cm stem, there was a mixup, but in retrospect the 10 is more aesthetically pleasing to me as the 8 has this step below the extension while the 10 has no transition. I ride with TRP levers, interrupters and silver bar ends and I still probably have 5 different hand positions. This is my favorite and most versatile setup. If I didn't like the ergonomics of the TRPs so much I'd try Gevanelles and lose the bar ends which are level with my TT.

If this is Eric in Chicago, who I see at the Patagonia store in the winter, feel free to reach out to me to check it out. I have an extra set of 46 cm noodles too.

I run a Dirt Drop stem on my Atlantis. I have for many years. I recommend it highly. Points: The obtuse angle is better on your liver, spleen and bladder in a head on accident than the acute angle of a regular road stem (ex paramedic fretting). I have some spinal issues, and the ability to raise the bars high is the best thing I ever did for my lower back and neck. Soooo comfortable. The seat level bisects the middle of the bar hooks, so I can use the drops at least fifty percent of the time, instead of always being on the tops and hoods. I don't look at the road right in front of my wheel as much...lol. Eric, I would recommend you get the 100, not the 80 mm stem. The stem raises your bars up and BACK quite a bit. I like a short top tube and so I tried the 80 and it was way too short. Of course that is all dependent on frame size, height, physical issues and yadda yadda...Best of luck getting comfy.

Glad you asked, as I am on the same quest with a 60cm Sam, now redundant in upright trim to a mystery bike. So many good responses!

I had a DD w/ some Nitto Rando drop bars on a Sam and loved it.  Only time I've been comfy on drops.  Go for it.

I had a too long Technomic (10cm) with Mark's bar on my Roadeo. I switched to an 8 cm DD but I had it bottomed out and tHe bars were just a tad high, so I got a 6 cm Tallux and it is perfect. I thought it looked kind of funny too. But I'm planning on using it on my Hunqapillar with some version of Albas.
