Hi All,

I'm considering purchasing a Hunqapillar in the near future, as I want to combine my love for roads and dirt onto the same vessel. I'm 6'2" with a 34 inseam and typically ride a 60cm st ctc on my vintage road bikes and XL mountain bike. I haven't measured my pbh, however was hoping to get opinions from Hunqapillar owners who are ridding 58cm and 62cm's. Curious what the 6' - 6'3 crowd is riding and how you like it. On the road bikes, 62cm is usually a little too large for my liking. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jason, you're taller than me, but I think we have the same length legs. A 61cm horizontal TT frame fits me perfectly. I think the 62 Hunq would be too big, especially as it has an angled TT. And don't forget you'll (presumably) be riding with fat tires. You would get a taller head tube and longer TT on the 62, and maybe that would be worth it to you as you might have a longer torso.

Remember the Riv frames are measured center to top . So a 60 c-c frame is really about 61.4 assuming 28.4mm top tubes .

I'd base my decision on the bars I'll be using, the bar height,  and top tube length .  Front-center too. I make no compromise when it comes to these , I have a minimum and it's not negotiable. Standover height is really not that important .

I ride a 60cm Bombadil and I have a pbh of 91.6 or so .  PBH is longer than your pant inseam , and pant inseam is wholly arbitrary anyways . PBH is literally , pubic BONE to the floor . It is measured firmly against the bone , yes, ouch , but it is at least binding .
In pants I can wear inseams from 32-35 inches , as fit "depends" on firstmost, personal preference for what a "fit" is !  You've got low rise, high rise, gussets no gussets , infinite kinds of gussets and design patterns , there just is no standard to a garment !  Thankfully :)

+1 on everything said here.  The 6 degree slope on the top tube makes a big difference, as well as the larger tire size.  I would talk to Riv, they know.

Your inseam is 34", but what's your PBH?

I'm 6' even, with a 32" inseam, but my PBH is 34.5" = 87.6cm...   I ride a 60cm Rambouillet, but a 56 Bombadil... if I was getting a Hunqapillar, I'd go for a 54 (I could pull off a 58, too, but would be on the bottom end of its size range for me).

My suggestion is:  get a good PBH measurement   (http://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=39 ), then call RBW....

Enjoy!

I can't speak from experience, but surely Deacon Patrick will speak? I know his Hunq handles quite technical singletrack with great aplomb. I think he rides a 60 or 62.

Deacon?

J,

When you say dirt, do you like to ride rough trails or more gravel and rolling singletrack.  Do you want to run drop bars?    The hunq is very heavy duty and the top tube is relatively long, depending on whether you size up or down.  This can make it tough to run drop bars.

PBH where to start. My PBH is 90 and I ride a 62 Hunqapillar and love it. I am at the low end of the fit for the 62, so there is a lot of range above 90 PBH to go. I let Grant decide my sizing based on my conversation with him. He went bigger and he was right. Here it is in the wild:

I don't own a Hunq but was sized for one when I visited Riv last summer. I ride a 58cm Atlantis, which I love but could easily ride a size up (which was actually Riv's suggestion). However on the Hunq, they suggested a 58cm. It felt bigger than the 58 Atlantis to me.

I'm 6' tall with a PBH of 90-91ish.

Not a Hunq but with a 89-90pbh I ride a 56cm Bombadil with drops very comfortably. I don't think I'd want to ride the 60cm version off road or at least not with drops.

agree with the top tube assessment importance. it's long. if you size up, youre likely ruling out drops...which may or may not be ok with how you want to set up the bike.  im not in your size, but i ride a 56 sam and a 54 hunq. the hunq feels bigger and definitely is longer. i have slightly more standover on the hunqapillar, but in the scheme of things that matters very little. i just swapped albatross bars from the hunq to the sam and i feel kind of cramped on the sam, where i had room to stretch out more (and not worry about my knees hitting the bar end shifters) on the hunqapillar.

I will pile on and agree with the sentiment that if 100 dudes exactly your size walked in to buy Hunqapillars, some would definitely get a 58 and some would definitely get a 62.

I'm 5'11" and I absolutely should be on a 54.  I've ridden it and it's awesome.  I've tried standing over the 58 and it's right there.  I mean, right there.  But I've ridden that, too, and it is also awesome.  If somebody took away all my bikes and told me I had to get by with two Hunqapillars for the rest of my life, one a 54 and the other a 58, I absolutely could do it.

The bigger of the two sizes screams for Albatross or Bosco handlebars.  The smaller of the two would probably be better with straight bullmoose, for MTB riding, or Noodles for a more roadish approach.  Maybe a dirt drop with Noodles or flared drops could balance your road vs offroad stuff.

I'm 6.2 with a pbh of 95 to 96 as measured by my wife while I hauled up hard! My Hunqapillar is a 62 cm with 48 cm Noodles.I have 50 mm Schwalbe Marathons on.  I came from a 62 cm Trek 5000 road bike to Hunqapillar. My old saddle height was 83.7 cm, right now I don't really know, just at a nice comfy place that gives me plenty of power and no pain. I have lots of saddle height adjustment to go on, both up and down. At the moment my Noodles are as high as possible, which means I can use the drops in all downhills and on rough gravel or soft dirt roads. I can also stay comfortable in the drops for a long time.

The Hunqapillar has so much adjustments available and so many possible choices for handlebars, pedals and tires that you can adjust into whatever position you enjoy. Personally I feel no need to listen to anybody else than my body when it comes to angles and measurements, and I do change them when I feel like it. I have long arms, but a relatively short torso, you should check yours to help you choose handlebars. Being 6.2 or 6.0 really doesn't mean anything. Some people have long necks and tall heads, others have a round head posted straight on the shoulders like me. No impact for your choice of bike.

I guess the message to you is to check that pbh, call Rivendell and feel safe that you will get a bike that fits.

Geir

I'd strongly recommend that you measure your PBH.  I'm just over 6'-2" and wear pants with a 34" inseam, but my PBH is 37".  Rather long legs for someone 6'-2".

Lots of good advice has already been given, as a regular Hunq rider I will second or third the recommendation to consider PBH, height isn't a good way to go in my experience. A number of people have said to talk with Riv, that is right up there with knowing your PBH. I suspect that is the first question they will ask you - followed by a few questions about your riding. I am in between a 54 and a 58; I went up to the 58 and am happy that I did, but I ride the bike more as an all-rounder than a dedicated off road bike. That said I think Deacon sized up as well, and he rides some nice single track. Good luck - talk to Riv, you will love the Hunqapillar!

Wow, lots of great advice...much appreciated from all. First thing I need to do is measure the pbh, maybe the wife can help. From what I have heard, I suspect the 58 will suit me better. Thanks again!

Thanks David, Garth, and mark for the replies. Sounds like 58 may be the way to go.

I have a Surly Krampus for the really rough stuff, most likely something more upright. Maybe Nitto Bullmoose. Thanks again, I'm glad I posted as lots to consider. Very helpful all.

I'm 6'1" and My pbh is right at 85.5 to 86. I'm running 700x50 supremes and when I stand over the center of the top tube barefoot I am just about touching my pb.

Finally got around to measuring my PBH and came up with 91, looks like a 58cm Hunqapillar is in the cards. I'll probably look to buy a used/complete, as this one will see a lot of dirt and I hate getting shiny new bikes dirty. If anyone knows of a 58cm complete for sale, I would be very interested. Thanks again for all the great advice!!!

Agree completely.  Some bikes just look wrong when clean.  Any Hunqa looks much better a little grubby.  Hunqa-owners don't even "clean" their bikes when they remove the dirt.  They are just "prepping" the bike for the next mud treatment.  ;-)
