Since nobody seems to be able to answer the core of my question, how do you:

1) Flash images / change parameters / connect to the Radxa
2) Update other stuff

without a USB OTG slot (which broke).

An explanation or "not possible" would be appreciated, as I have a board here for 6-7 days now and can't do anything with it linux wise. (can't change parameter to boot from SD without USB OTG)

Could you boot to linux?
If yes then point 2 is possible.
point 1 is maybe possible witk writing boot partition with dd. (Haven't test)

If you colud not to boot linux or android that i'm afraid that your only chance is fo go some cell phone fixin shop and ask if they can fix your connector (or what ever)

It's like I have a BRAND new board, but the OTG instantly broke after the first try of pushing the cable inside.

The basic android that comes with the board is still on there, and bootable.
The only difference to my board and a new one, is the OTG slot is broken.

So you can boot it to linux side then.
Here is app if you do not have icon:
in your case from my point of view is maybe time to wait a bit. Uboot to radxa is just back of corner and it maybe help with you (and me, + rest) to program board without OTG port.
Even one mistake in wrong place make will brick your device and there is no way to get it up after that.

Following is purely speculation..i simply don't know and i do not have time to figure it out.
IF and i mean IF parameter file is on /dev/mtdblock0 area then it's MAYBE possible copy image to there which will boot from SD card.

I first need to get Ubuntu on there I guess (without USB for sure, here we have my problem again) to be able to use that app icon.

Hoping for Tom Cubie to come up with a great solution for this haha, I'm pretty paralized here but thanks for your attempt to help and advices :)

I have some good news. Now we can completely boot off nand flash and
run the whole system on SD card(now tested ok with android and linux
is on the way). Tutorial will be on the wiki soon.

ie. you can have one system on nand flash for daily usage, and try
different new systems on SD cards, or switch different SD cards with
different system on it.

This will make somebody's life easier... But it will be also more
confusing for someone...
Sigh...

You need to flash the boot-linux.img to recovery partition to replace
the original recovery.

How, without an USB cable? where do you flash it if you only have android and no PC connection?

Any news about the "flash without USB" method already?

My HDMI to DVI cable, USb to TTL, and CR battery just arrived. Just waiting for that flashing solution then I can give it a go :o

I'm sure you won't need this solution unless your USB OTG broke (like mine). You can always use the upgrade_tool and better tools if you use your USB OTG port. Then you have plenty of possibilities, see http://wiki.radxa.com/Rock/flash_the_image#Linux

Yao, thanks for the doc and, i'll try it as soon as my MicroSD-cardReader is here. Is there any possible way to flash Linux to the recovery image of RR, without USB???

I see i can upgrade Android in your docs, but to get linux running i will need to write to the partitions i think (without the USB that is)

on Linux, write sdboot-header.img into beginning of your micro SD card. (you'll lose all data on it)

then, your SD card should have a 1GB FAT partition. format it, mount it, then put rksdfw.tag sd_boot_config.config, and Radxa's update image for SD card as "sdupdate.img" into root directory of SD card.

e.g.
dd if=sdboot-header.img of=/dev/sdX bs=1M conv=fsync
mkfs.vfat /dev/sdX1
mount /dev/sdX1 /mnt
cp rksdfw.tag sd_boot_config.config /mnt/
cp path/to/radxa_update.img /mnt/sdupdate.img
umount /mnt

due to lack of my free time, no perfect document is available. of course there is no guarantee.
good luck!

What windows version are you using? The SD Firmware tool doesn't find my SD card, even though the SDcard reader is brand new (and SDHC compatible, 4GB sd card)

Excuse the double post but problem solved - you need to set the Compability to Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows 7 is not supported

You have to execute as Administrator -> select SD_Firmware_Tool.exe, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator" in context menu.

I have same problem and solved without to change Compability.

Hi Ethan R

What does it mean when you say BT not working. Does it not find the bluetooth devices at all.

My RR works very well after the upgrade.

Usually i had the problem of my Bluetooth keyboard being "paired" and "connected", but then unable to type.

Now I see no single device in the Bluetooth android settings, not paired, not found, not connected.

I'm sure my keyboard didn't break this one day

Thank you..but I used my dad's windows PC....next time if I will need
I'll try by linux.

I have another question....
In the wiki I read this Note: " Only android update.img is supported
now. More work needs to be done for linux update.img"

Before to have the OTG problem I flashed the dual-boot image, can I
have some problem flashing the
"radxa_rock_android_upgrade_from_sdcard_140314_update" image from SD
card?

Thnks again

Open your phone's bluetooth to see whether RR and phone can detect each other. If not, upgrade system again with the sdcard. and do as the same again.

can't test on windows so not sure if it's the keyboard or not.

Sorry but I seem to be blind, where is that reply/post of yours?

I know this here - http://wiki.radxa.com/Rock/flash_the_image#Install_the_image_on_RR_without_PC - but it doesn't tell me how to flash the boot-partition, or if the DD is enough already (which I highly doubt)

Maybe i just can't find it though

it tells how to flash, but I cannot read what you really wanted.

I'm sure these are working, I'm sure these are enough, for me. if it's not enough for someone, and if someone really want to try, I'll try to make it better.

but, I'm just a person in user community. I cannot give any service which is guaranteed to be perfect.
it's ok to doubt my reply. I don't force it. you can do only the thing what you can believe.

Best Regards,

You seem to misunderstand me, i don't want to UPGRADE linux, i want to INSTALL linux on a new board, without a USB OTG port.

The link you posted shows how to upgrade Linux from Linux, not how to Install Linux from SD card without USB otg.
