When I installed the demo I got the PTGUI Viewer. Then I bought the Pro license and uninstalled the demos, followed by installing the paid version, but alas, no Viewer!

Can you help me to get the viewer back, please?

I'm having the same problem and followed the same upgrade via demo scenario.  Now on 12.24.  Viewer won't start either in stand-alone or via the tools menu on the main app.  I see it running in the task manager and there can be multiple instances if I try different ways without stopping the task before trying again.  No errors, just viewer does not shup up on screen.   Windows 11 Home, Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti.

I had he same problem Paul & Bill.  What fixed it for me was changing the compatibility settings for the program to 'Windows 8', and now it works fine.

Also having trouble running PTGui Viewer.
Yesterday I started  to install a trial of PTGUI Pro 12 and stopped the install process when asked if I wanted to overwrite PTGui Pro already in the application folder.
Thought it best not to overwrite my licensed version 11.32 PTGui Pro.
Be good to know if it is possible to run a trial version along with a licensed older version.

Details
Macbook Pro M1 - MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1
PTGui Pro 11.32 - this was previous 11.31 before the problem and 11.32 was downloaded and installed yesterday as an attempted fix.

When I Run PTGui Pro and select menu - Tools > PTGui Viewer, no application is shown, PTGui Pro remains in focus.

I checked under Apple menu > Force Quit and PTGui Viewer app is shown after choosing the menu option Tools > PTGui Viewer as above.

Force quit on PTGui Viewer clears the app out of the Force Quit window without any error messages.
Repeated attempts to run PTGui Viewer via Tools > PTGui Viewer produce the same results - no PTGui Viewer application to be found apart from in the background as shown in Force Quit.

Until recently I could right click on a pano image file in finder and choose Open With > PTGui Viewer.
But PTGui Viewer is not currently shown as an option under Open With

Any thoughts on what to try next to get PTGui Viewer back in my Open With menu and running from Tools > PTGui Viewer would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I just tried on my M1 mac running Sonoma but don't see any problems with
the viewer from PTGui 11.32.

Maybe the aborted install broke things. Could you try removing all
copies of PTGui from your computer (and quitting them first). Then
install the trial version of PTGui 12. After installing, go to your
Applications folder and simply rename the application to 'PTGui 12
Trial' or something like that. Then install your licensed copy of PTGui
11.32. You now have both.

Hi Joost,

Thanks, PTGui Pro deleted from the application folder.
PTGui Pro 12 Trial installed and renamed to PTGui Pro 12 Trial
PTGui Pro 11.32 re-install

Both versions of PTGui Pro and PTGui Viewer now appear under the right click "Open With" menu and open a pano file.

Neither versions of PTGUI are able to run PTGui Viewer and show a pano from the Tools > PTGui Viewer menu.

PTGui Viewer runs in the background and the PTGui Viewer menu is shown over the top of the PTGui Pro menu up top.
But the PTGui Pro application remains the top level focus and PTGui Viewer application does not appear.

Screen grab of PTGui Viewer menu with PTGui Pro remaing as the top level focus after attempting to run PTGui Viewer from the Tools > PTGui Viewer menu option.
PTGui Viewer application is not hiding behind the PTGui Pro application window - it doesn't appear to load or be shown behind the PTGui Pro application windows either.
only the PTGui Viewer menu is loaded.
PTGui-Viewer-run-from-Tools---PTGui-Viewer-Menu.jpg

Thanks for your help, I am able to run PTGui viewer from the right click > Open With option again which is what I was looking to do.
And also running 12 Pro trial along with 11.32 to check it out.

Cheers,
Andrew

I have also lost PTGui Viewer since upgrading to PTGui Pro v12.24 on Windows 11 Pro.

Any attempt to start the viewer now results in the error:- "Failed to create connection to server 'nl.newhouse.ptguiviewer.2.9.server' on topic 'CMDLINE': a clients attempt to establish a conversation has failed."

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and even reverting to earlier versions but PTGui Viewer will no longer run.

Could those who are experiencing this issue let me know which Nvidia
driver version you are using? One way to see this is by doing Help -
System Information in PTGui, the driver version is shown at the bottom
at 'CL_DRIVER_VERSION'.

Hi Andrew,

This is normal behavior. When you do Tools - PTGui Viewer, it will open
the PTGui Viewer application but no panorama. So you only see the menu
bar (from which you can open a panorama).

If you want to open the current panorama in the viewer, go to the
Preview tab, or use the View button in the Create Panorama tab.

Kind regards,

CL_DRIVER_VERSION: 31.0.101.4577 is the latest driver here (Windows 11, NVidia RTX3080Ti).  This issue has been present since early September for me.  There has been at least a couple of Nvidia driver updates since then, but the issue persists.  As I mentioned before, I found a fix by changing the setting on the program compatibility tab to 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 8' for PTGui Viewer and then it works fine.
cheers
Bill

Hi Bill,

31.0.101.4577 seems to be an Intel Arc driver. If you have multiple GPUs
there will be multiple CL_DRIVER_VERSIONs.

I've tried 528.49 and 546.01 but couldn't replicate the issue.

It might also be related to the Intel/nvidia dual gpu combination.

Anyone experiencing this (on Windows) could you let me know which
hardware and which driver version you have?

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

Yes, that was the first place I looked but there doesn't seem to be any solution!

Hi Billy,

Bill Landenberger's solution was to enable the Windows 8 compatibility
mode for PTGuiViewer.exe. See screenshot. Does that work for you?

Kind regards,

Is this a single GPU or do you have a dual GPU setup? There would be
multiple CL_DRIVER_VERSIONs in Help - System Information.

No, that made no difference whatsoever!

I have used PTGui for years - it was only after installing v12.24 that PTViewer stopped working.

Seems to me that it has changed something within Windows as reinstallation of both PTGui and the NVIDIA drivers make no difference!

Hi Billy,

You might try reinstalling an older PTGui version; see 1.8:
https://ptgui.com/support.html#1_8

PTGui itself doesn't change anything on your system; it's a standalone
application without any drivers. You can install multiple versions side
by side, see 3.29:
https://ptgui.com/support.html#3_29

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

As mentioned in my first post, I already tried that but unfortunately it's whatever happened after installing v12.24 that caused PTViewer to stop working.

However, I reinstalled a full system backup, i.e. an image of my HD before installing v12.24, and everything works perfectly again.

Re-installing v12.24 again on the backup image results in the same problem - no PTGui viewer - so clearly something is happening during the install of v12.24.

So although you say that v12.24 doesn't change anything why does everything work fine until the installation of v12.24?

Hi Billy,

I'm sorry but I really have no idea. PTGui only installs its files under
c:\program files\ptgui. It doesn't change anything in Windows (apart
from registering its file extension). Perhaps Windows updated the GPU
driver in the background?

The problem has been reported by several users but I haven't been able
to reproduce it yet. The one thing I've found out is that the hang
occurs in the initialization of OpenGL. For details see:

https://groups.google.com/d/msgid/ptgui/9b390b44-dd2b-41f6-9881-afc811a4875f%40ptgui.com

and this is something out of PTGui's control. If the driver decides to
hang, the viewer can do nothing but wait.

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

I've also tried re-installing the NVIDIA drivers including swapping between the "Studio" and "Gaming" versions but still same error.

Until this is solved you may install FSPViewer as an alternative to the
PTGui Viewer. This does not use OpenGL so it should work:
https://www.fsoft.it/FSPViewer/

Also, could you send me the output of Help - System Information in
PTGui? Perhaps this helps me reproduce the problem.

Kind regards,

G'day Joost,
Ah, of course - I just looked at the bottom of the listing.  I thought version 31.xx sounded a weird driver version!  Much further up the list it has version 546.17 listed as the CL driver version for the Nvidia card (RTX3080Ti).  I have tried disabling the onboard graphics device, but it makes no difference.
cheers
Bill

An update:

I've managed to reproduce the problem once, also using nvidia driver
version 546.17. I can't reproduce the problem consistently, sometimes it
works fine. Debugging shows that openGL initialization hangs. I've filed
a bug report with nvidia.

For a workaround, this seems to work: if the viewer window doesn't
appear in a few seconds, open Windows Task manager by right clicking in
the task bar. Click More Details, go to the Details tab, select each
instance of PTGuiViewer.exe and click End Task. From then on the viewer
can be started normally, I presume it will work until the next reboot.
See attached screenshot.

Kind regards,

Afraid this doesn't work for me. No matter how many times I "End Task" the PTGuiViewer.exe it still does not appear.

However, if I attempt to open PTGuiViewer as normal from within PTGui it will eventually appear after about 10-15 minutes but is blank with the "Failed to create connection to server 'nl.newhouse.ptguiviewer.2.9.server' on topic 'CMDLINE': a clients attempt to establish a conversation has failed." over it.

Attempting the same thing for the second time and waiting another 10-15 minutes results in the same result as before.

Attempting for a third time and again waiting the 10-15 minutes, the viewer appears with the pano displayed but with the "Failed to create connection to server 'nl.newhouse.ptguiviewer.2.9.server' on topic 'CMDLINE': a clients attempt to establish a conversation has failed." still overlaid. Closing the error box, the viewer works as normal.

Closing the viewer and then attempting to open again just results in going back to the start, whereby the previous process of waiting for 15 minutes each time and repeating until the pano appears is necessary.

Annoying, but I'm just using DevalVR to preview now so I can still get by!

Too bad. I was not able to reproduce the problem consistently, only
occasionally. So i guess that's why killing and restarting the viewer
worked for me.

Hi

i started using PTgui again after a few weeks of inactivity and noticed i have the same problem. ptgui viewer will not open from within the app, i see the process but the viewer wont show up. Right clicking on a picture already processed and asking to visualize it with the viewer sometimes opens it after 20-30 seconds, sometimes doesnt work at all, not even the process. When it finally eventually opens, it gives the same warning of the picture shared by  billy hepburn and shows the panorama

im running windows 10 with a rtx4060, driver version 546.33

any help is much welcome

Hi Luca,

This is a known bug in previous Nvidia GPU drivers for Windows. They
have fixed it in the most recent driver.

You can upgrade your driver here:
https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx

I'm not sure if Windows Update already carries this driver, but you
could try updating Windows first.
