Hey and hello,

i have the following problem:
for a series of backplates i shot spherical panos as domes.
Usually i did 4 series of 5 bracketed images.
Sometimes i have moving objects in the series, e.g. cars, persons and so on.
My first idea was to eliminate them using the masking tool in PTGui Pro 10.0.15 but that didnt work: the red hiding mask left a black hole because this tool masks all 5 images of the bracketing series.
The next step was to retouch all the concerned pictures in PS which is quite a lot of work to do.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this problem in a smarter way?

I am looking forward hearing and reading from you!
Best pano-regards,
Alexander

Unlink the images once you've done all the alignment stuff. Then do the masking and it will only affect the image you're working on. So long as you don't run the optimizer again the alignment won't change.

While this works it might cause visible seams or other artifacts.

I must have been lucky. I've only had to do it once (someone hiding behind a column in a church stuck his head out in the middle of a bracket and I didn't notice) and it worked perfectly.

Create the panorama with LDR blend planes. Then in photoshop paint the
mask of the layer with the best exposure white. Try to not have clipped
highlights inside the area. If there is a visible brightness difference,
create a selection rectangle slightly larger than the hole in the mask
and use Match Color to adjust it.

Yes, it works perfectly sometimes. With Exposure Fusion more often than
with True HDR, but even with Exposure Fusion you sometimes get reduced
contrasts or washed out colors.

Yes, it was EF I was using. It was quite a small area in relation to the whole panorama, and luckily right in the middle of a frame and nowhere near a seam.

Dear Roy, dear Erik,

thank you very much for your help and advice.
I just tried Roy's idea to unlink the pictures after aligning and optimizing: unfortunately t did not work.
The mask i am setting appears in all the other pictures of the bracketing series :-(
STOP: i've made a mistake: i unlinked only the picture i was masking in, but i have to unlink all pictures first before starting to mask.
OK, it seems to work.

@ Erik: i am afraid i cannot follow your advice because i need a HDRI spherical pano in an .hdr and a .exr file. Or maybe i didn't get you right?

Thank you very much and best regards,

I assumed you want a LDR panorama, sorry. Must investigate...

Let's keep it english. Others might benefit from this discussion, too.

OK, i’ll try to continue in english:

I have checked now the unlink-and-mask version: it doesn’t work properly. Some results are quite alright, some don’t work at all and in most cases there are visible seams and breaks.
I think that PTGui has no perfect solution for this very specific problem.
So i’ll return to retouch all the source images in PS which is quite a lot of work to do.
But i am still wondering if one of you pano-professionals out there finds a solution.

Lets stay in touch,
best regards and many, many thanks,
have a nice weekend

Alexander

Hi Alexander,

Having different masks in overlapping bracketed images is not designed
to work. That's why linking the images will also copy the masks.

What you could try is the following: in the Create Panorama tab output
'HDR: HDR blend planes' and 'HDR: HDR panorama'.
Choose HDR file format: Photoshop Large (psb).

You'll get a layered photoshop file with 32 bit HDR layers. The bottom
layer is the blended and merged panorama. On top of that are the blend
planes at the same reference luminocity. The top layers have a black
layer mask (everything is hidden). In photoshop you can paint on the
layer mask with a white brush to reveal content from a specific blend
plane in the areas where ghosting occurs.

It works similar to this old tutorial:

Hey Joost,

thank you very much!
That seems to be a fine solution.I will only have to adapt the light / the brightness after brushing single persons.
I will check this out!

Best regards,
perfect support, thank you!

Hi

This is the method I'm using and it works if a little confusing.

Two quick questions:

1. How do you process the resulting image to get the output file? If you do toning in PS, it will mess up the edges?
2. Do you plan to implement some Ghost removal for HDR panoramas? For me it's really the only missing feature (but I'm sure I''ll find more ;)!

Thanks

Only non-global operations like f.e. Shadows and Highlights will mess up
the edges.

For tonemapping HDR to LDR it's better to use a third party program
which is 360° seam aware like photomatix or SNS-HDR, or do your
tonemapping in PTGui as described here:
http://www.ptgui.com/support.html#6_14
Omit steps 3. and 4. for HDR images, instead simply load your HDR image.

Thanks Erik. Is that process the same as Tools | Tone Map HDR image?

You get the option to tonemap an image, just like if you press "Tone Map
Settings" on Exposure / HDR tab. You don't get the option to do Exposure
Fusion.
