Hi All,
I am a Stream Team Captain for SOLVE and have been active in watersheds in the Portland Metro area on both the East and West side. You could also check out their program and volunteer opportunities. Friends of Trees has neighborhood tree plantings, but also has a Green Spaces Initiative that partners with local jurisdictions for tree plantings in public urban places. They are recruiting for Tree Team Crew Leaders now!

Cheers,
Carine

Friends of Trees is seeking new crew leaders for our upcoming planting season. If you like working with people, enjoy being outdoors, and are interested in restoring natural areas or planting trees in neighborhoods, this role is made for you!

There are almost 400 active volunteer crew leaders working with Friends of Trees. Join this dynamic, fun and energetic team by signing up for a required one-day training. Crew leaders guide small groups of volunteers to plant trees safely, correctly, and have fun doing it. We ask that you volunteer for at least four planting events over the course of our planting season (October – April). You can choose which dates and schedule them in advance at your convenience.

The trainings are extremely popular and space fills up quickly. This year’s trainings are sponsored by KBOO Community Radio. Save your space by registering soon for one of the trainings below!
We're excited that KBOO is sponsoring this year's Neighborhood Trees Crew Leader Trainings.

Green Space Initiative Program
Saturday, October 27  (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) – Audubon Sanctuary of Portland, NW Portland

If you have any questions or need more information about this role, please don’t hesitate to contact Jenny or Andy in the Volunteer & Outreach Program at 503-595-0213. We look forward to working with you!

  • Greet and register volunteers
  • Give a short safety talk to volunteers
  • Explain project overall restoration or enhancement goals

    Hello restoration enthusiasts!

Hope your summer is superb. Thought I should forward a posting about
stream team volunteers to the group to see if there are any interested
takers. I know that Clark County in Vancouver, WA has a good reputation
for their restoration programme and that these opportunities sometimes lead
    to jobs down the line.

While we're on the subject of restoration, the Johnson Creek Watershed
Council is hosting a brand new science pub series (sorry under 21 folks!)
entitled Hot Fish, Cool Beer. The first event will be held *Tuesday
    September 11 from 6-8 p.m. at **4th Street Brewing Company (77 NE 4th St.
    Gresham).*

I'll start to post more opportunities going forward. Good luck to you all
    in your restoration endeavors!

Awesome update Carine.  I just wanted to add that I was recently hired by Friends of Trees as their Green Space Initiative Specialist.  As you alluded to, there will be many Saturday plantings opportunities throughout the fall and spring.  Need any extra incentive to get involved?  I'm proof that following your passion for environmental restoration through PSU's Ecological Restoration Guild and other local organizations can lead to fun, fantastic jobs down the line.

We are still recruiting students to take on leadership positions with ERG in the upcoming school year.  Currently, all of the major positions are open.  SALP has officially recognized us to operate as a 5th tier advocacy organization, entitling us to $3,000 in programming funds.  Start thinking now of cool speakers and events you would like to make happen at PSU in 2012-13.

-Enjoy the waning days of summer!

Hey ERG-ers!

I would like to nominate Ace Curtin for President of the Ecological Restoration Guild. He has been a very active member of the Environmental Club this past year, and has been one of the most consistent caretakers of the Orchard and the EClub community garden plots over the summer. He has been working closely with ERG VP 2011-2012 - Steven Teegardin and has spoken to a number of us about his plans to help get rid of invasives on campus. He also has experience with environmental education. For all these reasons and more, I see a good fit with his personal goal for this year and the mission of ERG!

Hope you all are enjoying the gorgeous blue skies and the quiet turning of the leaves... :)
