The Maufe (formerly Muff) family were known for their department store business in Bradford, which began its life as a drapers shop. Thomas Parkinson MUFF (12 IV 1821 - 17 IV 1901) in 1845 became a partner with his brother-in-law (his sister Betsy's husband), Henry BROWN (c.1804 - 25 III 1878) in Brown and Muff, which was at that time a drapers, hosiers, tailors and hatters.
Thomas Parkinson Muff married Eliza INGHAM in 1844, and they had, with other issue, three sons, Henry MUFF (1850 - 3 II 1910), Charles James MUFF (1851 - 9 IX 1928) and Frederick Broadbent MUFF (1857 - 2 VI 1938). In 1909, these sons all changed their surname by deed poll from MUFF to MAUFE, "for ourselves and our respective issue". The deed poll stated that they were "desirous of reverting to the old form of our surname".
At about the same time as the name change, and in response to their rising fortunes, the family moved from Bradford to Ilkley, inspiring the ditty: "In Bradford 'tis good enoof to be known as Mrs Muff. But in Ilkley, by the River Wharfe, 'tis better to be known as Mrs Maufe!"
Henry Muff/Maufe was married in 1878 to Maud(e) Alice SMITHIES (1850 - 14 X 1928), and their son was Sir Edward Brantwood MAUFE, RA, FRIBA (12 XII 1882 - 12 XII 1974), the architect whose works include Guildford Cathedral and the RAF Memorial at Runnymede.
Maud(e) Alice Smithies was a daughter of Charles SMITHIES (31 X 1812 - 1867) and his wife, Grace SALT (9 IX 1812 - 20 VII 1873), a sister of Sir Titus SALT, 1st Bt (20 IX 1803 - 29 XII 1876), MP (Liberal) for Bradford, 1859-61. Her parents were first cousins, Charles Smithies being a son of Robert SMITHIES (1775 -24 V 1835) and his wife (married 12 IX 1803), Ann SYKES (1776 - II 1843), and Grace Salt being a daughter of Daniel SALT (10 VI 1781 - 28 XII 1843 ) and his wife (married 5 VII 1802), Grace SMITHIES (15 III 1779 - 10 XI 1854), the sister of the said Robert Smithies.
Frederic Broadbent Muff/Maufe and his wife (married 1885), Helen Mann STATHAM (c.1862/3 - 20 VIII 1923), were the parents of Philip Broadbent MAUFE (8 X 1888 - 26 I 1975), who was married on 20 June 1914 to Marguerite Humphris CARTER (8 II 1892 - 29 III 1988). The second son of that marriage, David Humphris MAUFE (1919 - 29 VII 2011), and his first wife (married 1940), Ann Barbara TURNER (c.1919 - 19 X 1966), were the parents of Tarquin David ("Teddy") MAUFE (born 1951).
Ann Barbara Turner was the eldest daughter of John Hastings TURNER (16 XII 1892 - 29 II 1956), novelist, dramatist and theatre director, and his wife (married 20 VI 1918), the silent film actress Laura COWIE (7 IV 1892 - 11 II 1969). John Turner's brother, Maxwell Joseph Hall TURNER, QC (10 V 1907 - 10 XII 1960), was the husband (married XII 1938) of the actress Fabia DRAKE, OBE (born Ethel McGLINCHY; 20 I 1904 - 28 II 1990); their only child, Deirdre Gabrielle TURNER (born III 1940) was married in 1972 to (as his second wife?) Michael William RAMPLING (born 26 III 1940), by whom she has an elder son, Christopher Maxwell ("Chris") RAMPLING, MBE (born 8 X 1973), who was HM Ambassador to Lebanon from 2018 to 2020.
Frederic Broadbent Muff/Maufe and his wife were also the parents of Helen Frances Broadbent MAUFE (16 IV 1895 - 13 II 1946), who was the first wife (married 1921) of Maj Francis Anson ARNOLD-FORSTER, DSO (20 III 1890 - 4 IX 1966), the youngest son of Edward Penrose ARNOLD-FORSTER (29 VIII 1851 - 19 I 1927) and his wife (married 26 VIII 1875), Edith Mary FORD (24 IV 1852 - 16 XII 1942), a granddaughter of Sir Francis FORD, 2nd Bt (15 II 1787 - 13 IV 1839) and a great-great-granddaughter of George ANSON (formerly ADAMS ; 25 VII 1731 - 27 X 1789), father of the 1st Viscount Anson and grandfather of the 1st Earl of Lichfield.
