Does OpenPnP use precision X/Y linear encoders?

It appears that OpenPnP does not use linear encoders for X  and Y position.  I might have missed the reference.
I see in the documentation where the Steps/mm is calibrated. This seems a bit coarse.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
