I’ve been out of the shop for a bit, taking care of family health issues.  I had a refin to do on an old fender to take up some of my time, but that’s been curing for a few weeks.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on learning my CAD software better and purchased a small 3d printer to play with.

I just got a request and deposit for a nylon string guitar. As I’ve been working on a design for the guitar, I realized I would need to make a slotted headstock for the guitar. I started looking at jig ideas for making slotted headstocks. The ones from LMI and Luthier Tool were rather expensive and the Stewmac drilling jigs were rather pricey as well.

I knew I could make wood templates and drilling guides, but figured it was a great time to work on CAD and 3d printing.

I made headstock templates for a standard steel string and both nylon and steel string slottted headstocks.

I also designed and printed a self centering drilling jig. I made it to accept drill guides from McMaster.

I had previously only designed a “wedgie” for immobilizing a Floyd Rose bridge during intonation.

I started down this path after seeing and printing a scissor jack posted on IanHatesGuitars instagram page.
Here are some photos of what I’ve printed thus far.

Really cool! I especially like the jack!

I’m working on a CNC unit to cut the graphics on a headstock overlay.

Moderate success thus far. I’m thinking to swap a laser unit in for the router since I think it will be smoother…

The first one was intended to look handwritten to match a t shirt design for a recent mission trip.

Nice job, David.

I admit to having the "real" versions of the scissor jack and the drilling jig. The drilling jig works really well and is a huge time-saver. The scissor jack works well enough, but I've very rarely used it, preferring other methods that I find simpler to use. Good for you for printing your own.

That leads to the interesting questions of whether or not we, collectively, could create a library of files for 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC router. Any collective interest in doing so?

I’d be interested - but I’m really inept - trial and error at this point!

Hey Charles,

I don’t have anything against any of the commercially available jigs. When I learned to build (from Charles Fox), one of the things that was most impressed upon me was his jig building talents. I tend to look at other luthiers jigs for ideas as well. I just toured Ryan Guitars in Westminster, CA and got some new jig ideas as well. While I have bought some jigs along the way, I tend to want to build all my own as the design process and building of the jigs teaches me a lot about how I build and what I want out of said jig. That being said, while the $300ish for any of the comercial jigs wasn’t really price prohibitive, the process of designing and prototyping these jigs taught me a ton about 3d design (I’m still a newbie at that) and 3d printing (also a newbie). I kept having to adjust sizing to fit the inserts so they were tight but not too tight as well as making the screw holes big enough to get the screws in cleanly without leaving slop.

I’m interested. I do not have a whole lot of designs het
I work with Easel pro and a small CNC router.
Last week Easel introduced 3D in their software and I’m trying that now.
Did make some nice inlays with abalone and bridges so far.

Speaking of jigs. Can anyone recommend a good jig for drilling Martin style acoustic peg heads. I’m a terrible measurer and I can never get my holes to line up

I made this from a 1938 D18.  I intended to bolt another piece of plywood to the drill press and have a single pin aligned with the drill bit and just move around from hole to hole.  But I actually just stick a Brad point bit in the holes and mark the locations.  You should always use Brad point bits.  And a drill press.  And put a piece of wood on the back to prevent chipping when the bit comes out the back.

Can you share the headstock drilling files and what inserts you used?

I made the same scissor jack the other day. It works pretty good. I think I might go back to gluing bridges on with gobars and might use the scissor jack for support.

If you look for pegboard attachments on thingiverse there's tons of good stuff. The back of my bench is covered in it.

I've also made many vacuum adaptors to go from my tools to my vacuum hose.

Its sort of difficult to measure small increments and I understand that part.  Here is a tool I got at Rockler that I sometimes use for  things like that.

I got all the parts from McMaster.
Press fit drill bushings - 96511A937 and 98042A353
Both are 3/8 tall, .261 id  1/2 od and .4062 id 5/8 od

Screws 98164A624 4-40 1 1/14 hex head (1/16 hex)
Nuts 90631A005 4-40 nylon lock nuts

It’s designed for the bushings to be a tight press fit.

You could start a group on Thingiverse.  I've been messing around with some of the files on there.

I never understand why drill bushings are so expensive.  It's a bummer.  $6 a piece seems crazy.

They are relatively expensive, but considering how much comercial jigs cost and that these can be reused if the 3d printed jigs break, it’s not such a big deal. One could easily make a wood jig for drilling these for almost nothing, however, making it thickness adjustable was my goal.

I just modified the file to try printing one similar to stewmacs design. I thought I’d compare how well each design clamps.

Yeah I made a note to order some when I get my first paycheck... Just took 3 months off so things are tight. But I looked at the price of the stewmac jigs and came to my senses.

I still think they are ridiculously expensive though.
