I just bought a used Sawstop and it seems that it will not operate if you mount anything less than an 8 inch diameter blade. I have a 6-in diameter blade for cutting fret slots and have used that with my old Powermatic. If this is true then I have to find a different blade or change my method of cutting fret slots.  Any of you folks have experience with this issue?

Thank you all, as always!

This is true. The safety brake needs to be very close to the blade. Sawstop offers brakes for 10 in and 8 in blades (usually a dado blade). Sawstop has great customer service. Call them to confirm.

This discussion on Lumberjocks is about this issue and has a simple solution.

It also looks like it would be dangerous if the safety mechanism were triggered while using a fretting blade.

The distance between the the brake and the blade must be around the width of a nickel. Anything more and it will not turn on. I bought a cheap Ryobi table saw for around $150 to do my fret slotting for this very reason.
