Richard,

Your message often sends me off on a tangent. This time it was the fungi leading to The contribution of fungi to the global economy | Fungal Diversity | Springer Nature Link then onto suggesting a league table of organisms.

Often people say this or that species or group is the ‘most important for life on earth’ or words to that effect. Perhaps springtails, viruses, earthworms etc.

The league table idea came from the mineral of the year competition that the earth scientist students run here and I think similar is done at some other universities. They run it as a knockout competition and stimulates a lot of debate about some of the minerals, what is ice etc.

Bit more tricky if comparing viruses with earthworms or an individual species. There is no criteria other than which gets the most votes but cases can be made for the different minerals if someone feels strongly.
