Subject: Walker Lake Education Day

Dear Friends, Volunteers, Exhibitors and Vendors,

Thank you for your support of the second annual Walker Lake Education Day. Thanks to your efforts, this year’s event will be bigger than last year, with 20 exhibitors and 3 other beach activities in addition to the free boat rides provided by Nevada Department of Wildlife. We will also have a rehabilitated loon to release at the lake for public viewing.

We are expecting up to 900 people to attend this year's event if it is anything like last year. We are hoping for even more visitors as the public continues to hear about the event through TV, radio, print media, direct mail and other public events.

Please note that the event has been moved back to Sportsman’s Beach (BLM beach).

We are again providing a large tent for vendors and exhibitors to shelter us from the wind and/or rain, but still dress in layers for this outdoor event. We will not have heaters in the tent. The weather forecast for Saturday, May 1, is a 65-degree high with lows in the high 30s.

Give yourself enough time to have your exhibits set up and ready for the 9 a.m. publicized opening of the event. We have a crew camping in the tent overnight, so please don’t disturb them before 7 a.m. If you need help unloading or setting up your exhibits, please ask. We will have 14 college students available to help us.

Please note that there is no electricity at Sportsman’s Beach. So you won’t want to bring exhibits that require power. We will have a generator for a sound system.

Please check in with me (Lorna Weaver) prior to setup for your table(s) assignment. We have several groups and agencies that are collaborating on space and want to be placed together.

Reminder: If you are a for-profit business that will be selling items at Education Day, we require a $20 booth fee to cover our permit costs. I will be collecting booth fees at the start of the event, if you have not already paid. At the close of the event, I will be asking all vendors to fill out a survey that includes gross receipts for the day (this is required by BLM).

This year, we will have two food vendors available for lunch – Indian tacos and barbecue. Otherwise, a packed lunch would be appropriate as we are not nearby any restaurants. Sportsman’s Beach does not have running water, so don’t forget to haul your own drinking water. Some water will be available for purchase from the food vendors, and Walker Lake Working Group will have a limited amount of drinking water available for the asking. Other things you might want to pack: sunscreen, camera and money for the silent auction, raffle and vendors.

We will start our program inside the tent at 1 p.m. and should conclude at 2:30 p.m. A need-to-be-present raffle and silent auction will start at 2:30 p.m., but should conclude by 3 p.m. when I expect the crowd to dissipate. The event is advertised to run until 3:30 p.m.

Before you leave, please look around your exhibit area and remove trash to help us leave the beach in pristine condition.

Please call me on my cell phone at (775) 224-4861 beginning Friday afternoon if you need anything. Otherwise, you may call Glenn Bunch at (775) 945-0519. Again, thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Sincerely,

Lorna Weaver
