Is it possible to create sub-folders, or sub-projects?
I need a hiearchy like so:

Education   <- this is a project or a folder
<education topic>   <- this is a folder or a project
Data Science   <- this is an <education topic> so I need folder (sub) or a project (sub)
Coursera   <- this is a folder or a project
<specific course>     <- this is a project
<education topic>
...
I need to be able to nest any number of folders, projects in any order as the top level container for tasks/sub-tasks.
so a folder could contain sub folders or projects
        and any project could contain folders or sub projects

Thank You!

All this is possible. MLO provides unlimited hierarchy where you may have folders/projects in any position.

Indeed this is all possible, and an everyday occurrence in my outline. In Windows, both Folders and Projects are created by checking a box. <Alt+Insert> creates another level. If you decide that a folder is really a project (or vice versa), just change your selection. Folders can even be projects, but I use folders as project-holders. That’s just me, though. 8-)

Hope this helps…

Is there anywhere that describes the behavior of folders at the root level? When I create a folder at the top level, then create a project within in, a duplicate project is generated at the same level. I can find no documentation on this behavior or what the behavior is intended to achieve.

Hi
Is the issue happening when you switch to AllTasks view?

No, when in Projects.

[FP] Foo
-- [P] Bar

The system creates:

[FP] Foo
-- [P] Bar
[P] [Prj:Foo] Bar

In the "Projects" view all tasks marked as projects are listed recursively, therefore embedded projects will show up:

a) For the first time as a part of the parent project;
b) For the second time as an independent project.

To avoid confusion, in MLO-Windows bring up the "Filter" pane and click on "Config" in the "General" section. Remove a checkmark next to "Continue searching in branch after main filter match". In MLO-mobile open "Custom View Settings" for the "Projects" view and disable "Continue searching in branch". The smaller projects will be only shown once as parts of the main project.
Also, you may focus on the parent project (use "Zoom in") to work on the smaller projects.

Do not delete sub-projects in the "Projects" view since they are not duplicates. If you are not sure, feel free to check the whole structure in the Outline (the "All tasks" view).
By the way, this answer is available on our FAQ.
