I really liked this feature when MLO 3 came out, and used it several times a day. Unfortunately it stopped working a few weeks ago, on both my devices. The new update is nice and the description says it fixes problems with OK Google, but it still does not work.

Can anybody advise? I use a Note 9 and the problem happened at the same time on an older phone, so I deduce it is a connected either to an MLO update or a Google Assistant update.

Thanks

Laurence

Hi Laurence,
Why you haven't described the problem? Stopped working doesn't say much :)

Hi Domas. The OK Google function of MLO 3 is a way of waking up the phone and taking a note which is sent automatically to the MLO Inbox. This stopped happening and the Notes are being stored in the phone stock Notes system instead.

Thanks Andrei, but I tried that, same problem. Does it work for you?

Do you mean "Ok Google" doesn't start listening? For example can you say, "Ok Google, tell a joke"

This is not a function of MLO so there might be Android settings changed.

I'm also on 8.1.0
It seems to have lost its record of the default note taking app and there seems no way to change it. I could uninstall MLO and reinstall but that would be too tortuous.

There is a way to change the default app for notes.  No need to reinstall MLO?

Laurence,

I have the same problem and have been unable to find a solution so far. Android keeps dropping the note into what appears to be a Google web app and won't pass the string to MLO.

Interesting, if I initiated Google Assistant from the widget it passes to MLO. If I initiated by voice it does not.

Yes it's weird. If I manually write "Take a note" in Google search, it saves the note to MLO, otherwise it doesn't.

CHANGE DEFAULT NOTE APP

Here’s what you need to do to change the default app on Google Assistant.

Step 1: Launch Google Assistant by saying the command Ok Google or by holding the home button. In case the Ok Google command isn't working for you, try these solutions.

Step 2: Say the command ‘Note to self’ or ‘Create a note.’

NOTE: You are only supposed to say the command. Don’t speak anything after that and wait for the Assistant to respond.

Step 3: On the screen that appears, tap on the Note to self option. I know it's not an intuitive button, but that's how Google offers it.

Here you will find all the supported apps. Tap on the app that you want to use and it will become your default note-taking app through Google Assistant.

SWITCH AMONG NOTE APPS

As you know if you say the command Create a note or Note to self, followed by the note text, it will be saved in the default app. At times, you would want to add notes directly in other apps too without going through the above steps.

To do so, launch Google Assistant and give the command, ‘Create a note in Evernote’ or ‘Evernote to open a note to self.’ Replace the word Evernote with the name of the app that you want to use.

Congratulations! You have mastered the art of switching between compatible note apps.

This is not the behavior I get when invoking Assistant by voice. When clicking on the text it toggles a time stamp. Long click gives the option to edit or delete. No option to choose a default app.

If I invoke by tap I'm able to choose the default app which is already set to MLO.

Google has changed some thing with Assistant recently. This was working when invoking by voice and I didn't used to see a difference between voice and touch.

I was researching this earlier today and came across an article that said there are actually four different versions of Assistant currently and each behaves differently.

The takeaway here would be that problems setting the default note app are not problems with MLO. Thay are problems with Google Assistant. If Google Assistant does not want to pass notes to MLO there's nothing MLO can do about it, you have to fix it in your own Google Assistant. Try searching this:

Google Assistant change default note app

This will find lots of posts about suggested ways of changing the offending setting, maybe one of them will match the Assistant version that you have.

Thanks Dale and Dwight

Alas the steps on that webpage don't work on my phone (Note 9).

Not did the Google search you suggested elicit a solution. I am inclined to think it's a bug in Google Assistant which will hopefully go away in due course.

Hi Laurence,
just wanted to double-check, did you try Andrei's offered solution - to call Google Assistant via widget?
I had exactly the same problem and none of other solutions worked.
However it seemed that Google widget called a different version of Google Assistant, which had the possibility to change default apps.
Cheers.

Dwight,

I agree. This isn't an issues with MLO. Google seems to have implemented Assistant into numerous products at different levels. Hopefully they're working toward a standard implementation and UX.

I finally got it to work by disabling (i.e. uninstalling the Google app) and then enabling it. This was at the cost of losing the layouts on my launcher. Sadly the problem returned a day or two later.

I don't know what widget is being suggested, but my practice was, before it stopped working, to say Hey Google Take A Note while the phone was in my pocket. If I have to open the phone and tap a button, I might as well use the MLO widget which was my practice before MLO was updated.

Dwight, the webpage you gave does not apply to or work with my phone (Note 9). The fact that the problem resolved when I disabled and restarted Google app, and then returned, perhaps after the Google app updated to the latest version, highlights it is to do with the link between MLO and Google app. I am sadly abandoning this very useful feature for it would be a greater inconvenience to work with an old version of Google Assistant.

Thanks all for feedback.

I have found that removing updates to Google Assistant restores the MLO OK Google functionality temporarily. But the suggestion above that the issue is because of Google does not help!

My experience to use "Ok Google" that will work most of the time is when I was offline which my android phone is not connected to internet.
If online, it will always go to default note.
BUT I am not sure whether it is different from device to device.

The page you were linked to says:

Note: The note to self feature is no longer supported in Assistant. The Google Assistant now comes with a built-in notes and list service.

So yes Google disabled linking to other apps for notes and lists, and now has its own proprietary in-built notes and lists service.

After a few more poking around the Google Assistant settings, I found that Google's changes to the notes and lists are a bit more complicated.

If you go to your Google Assistant settings and click "Services" you will go to this page:

https://imgur.com/a/osrJlxA

So now Google will have its proprietary in built lists and notes services that can sync with other online services. MLO is not one of them.
