I use task by email to get my ideas to the MLO inbox before they are gone. But I'd also like to see parsing work with task by email the same way it works with desktop. That way I can quickly add things like contexts and due dates etc. Does anyone else see this as extremely useful?

I 2nd that. I've had the same thought, but because I have access to the Rapid Task Entry all day, it doesn't bother that much that I can't parse via email. Would be nice though.

Try this: Send a task to Task By Email (TBE) and include parsable parameters. LLater, after it has shown up in your inbox (with the parsable parameters still showing in the task caption) select the task and hit alt-enter once or twice. The task should be parsed at that point.

That's a nice tip, but I don't use the desktop version that often. I process most of my tasks using the iPhone app. I'd like to be more efficient and not have to touch a task twice for stuff I captured in the email the first time. I've seen many other task apps handle parsing logic with task by email. So then why can't MLO handle TBE parsing logic?

I was surprised as well that MLO doesn't support parsing tasks by email. Seems strange as the functionality is there already - it just needs to be applied to TBE just as with any other task.

Please add this functionality MLO! It would help automate a lot of my work.

Agree, with testing a lot of task managers & outliners, MLO is probably the best. But even like all the others, there are some functionalities missing. Email parsing is one of them. Putting all kind of parameters like CONTEXT & reminders, makes the functionality much more vlaueble. Moving a task to a folder or project, whould be much appareciated, but having the first two added is a requirement for an relaible workflow. I have tons of other ideas, but that should be discussed in other topics.

I agree with both of you that it would be great to have parsing
available in TBE without having to ask for it. But I have a question?
Would you run the parsing on every task submitted through TBE? Some
tasks should not be parsed. For example, in the task

Congratulate Farhad Manjoo @fmanjoo on his latest essay

@fmanjoo is a twitter but if I parsed this message MLO would try to make
it into a context. How would you go about flagging which items to parse
and which items not to parse?

There is a way to do that which works today. Send your tasks in to TBE
the same as you do today, and wherever it helps you, go ahead and
include parsing commands. A while later, on Windows, open your MLO
inbox, find the to-be-parsed items and one at a time, select the item
and type Alt-Enter. You can find this in the user's manual on page 104,
under "Parsing the task caption in the Outliner"

I would definitely like this feature as well. I somehow often assume this feature is there and then discover it's not.

I use MLO primarily on my phone but haven't been adding my tasks half of the time because I don't have MLO loaded on my work computer (not allowed) -- so I end up not using MLO very often because this feature isn't there.

I don't often use a personal desktop that I could run the MLO client on, so Alt-Enter, while cool, doesn't help me out.

Wonder if they'll see that enough people want this feature someday?

Hello ToTheMoonAlice,

Have you tried the portable version of MLO? I use that, along with a few other portable apps (VirtuaWin, FastStone Image Viewer, ReNamer, IcoFX, FDF Text Extractor, BulkFileChanger-x64). I shouldn't encourage you to use portable apps if that doesn't fit with your employer's cybersecurity policy, but maybe they have a process for virus-checking and approving some personal, portable apps?

Hmm, that might be a good idea. You just keep the whole program and data on a thumb drive?

Yes... although I've actually copied it all from the thumb drive into a folder on my laptop, because it's more convenient. The mlo.exe file will run, without having to install anything. I have a shortcut to it dragged onto my taskbar.

In my case, I persuaded my employer to buy me a copy of MLO, but it's easier for me to update the portable version without having to ask my IT team to install updates.
