I have a few thoughts on modernising the icon for MSC from the previous MSU icon. My reasoning is that the existing icon represents a utility that keeps software up to date and MSC presents more of an App Store experience (in addition to the existing functionality).
I don't want to suggest updating the icon for the sake of it but I think the user interaction with munki has changed enough in munki 2 that the icon should reflect a status of a user application rather than a system utility that only pops up when there is an update.
I could be way off base though (this came about since I'm practicing my app icon design skills anyway and used MSC as a guinea pig in a hypothetical scenario. Happy to post the results if there is interest).
Yeah, same here. Until I put our custom icon on MSU people were constantly either mixing it up with Apple software update or not trusting it.

Just wanted to chime in with a vote of approval for Mr. Grande's work, but I don't think they need to be flatter, Yosemite doesn't mean flat(or circle, or any other one style/shape), in my take on the visual cues/guidance from Apple.I really like the very distinct Status icon, as it clues the user in on what is going on at that moment(almost like a yellow traffic signal.)
Thanks, Allister
What about the two do you like/dislike other than the open box. I'm happy to provide the image file for people to play with but it's in pixelmator format (I'm using it more than photoshop these days).
There is an image displayed in the MunkiStatus progress status window. It need not be the same as the application's icon. It seems to me it should be the _same_ as the application icon of Managed Software Center to reinforce the idea that these things are connected/related.

Anyway, a question I have at this stage. _IF_ there was a decision to modernise the icon then what elements are important. At the moment there is a hard drive, an arrow pointing to it and some circular arrows. I interpret this as storage, putting something on that storage and keeping in sync (up to date, maintained, etc.)
I like the "container of apps" motif. Makes sense in this age of ssd's to not picture an actual hard disk plus MSC has a bigger focus on presenting apps than MSU did. I also like the circular arrows. Other than putting those two elements in a Yosemite style design, what is missing?

My only impetus for starting this discussion is that I feel MSC has evolved away from being a systems admin utility that users are forced to deal with
to an application store that users should 'want' to use and the icon should reflect that.

Not to veer off topic, but this is why I requested an enhancement to change the name - a normal user may get confused when MSC logs them out to run MSU.

the A in a bucket icon? Haven't seen it outside Greg's post. It looked pretty simple to replicate though so I did (trapezoid with a handle cut out of it)
How did you do the embossed look? I've been playing with inner shadows, masks etc but can' get it to look right (I no longer have photoshop)

My suggestion for MSC icon.
This is not yet finalized, I have to find a sharper version of that white-ish Apps-symbol.
And maybe all items should be colored and outlined the same way as Apps-symbol?

And now for something completely different. It avoids being yet another blue icon, and evokes the old MSU icon. It needs "embossing" and the line weights and proportions aren't right yet... but the basic idea is there.

I like this icon a lot. It is a riff on the current icon, which would hopefully make sense to end users.
What would it look like in a myriad of different colors?

The real question is whether the screen is 16:9 or not ;)

Greg, I think the screen in the middle is a little too wide.Narrow it just a couple of nudges and you get a bit more room for arrows and such.

See this: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/110247/wrong-icon-of-unix-symbolic-link-in-finder
Do you have a proposal/suggestion/idea?
This doesn't actually seem to be much of a problem; either the Finder will update the icon eventually or it won't.
(Did you try double-clicking the icon to launch the app? Did the icon change?)
Or looking at it another way, there's not much I can do about it. (My machine's symlink shows the new icon in the Finder...)
The entire reason the symlink exists is to help people used to the old location and name to find Managed Software Center. One might say it holding on to the previous icon actually helps in that regard.
Of course I'd expect that for machines upgrading from Munki 1.x to 2.0.0.2155 or later will have a symlink with the new icon regardless, since it will have never pointed to an item with the old icon.
Thanks!
