Hello,

I am using MIT App Inventor Classic and MIT App Inventor 2, on Windows 8.1, in Chrome 31.0.1650.63 m

I have the same application made in both AppInv1 and AppInv2 that plays an audio stream from a website. The problem is that in AppInventor 2, the player stops playing in backgroud (when i press home and use the phone or when the phone screen turns of, etc), unlike the player from AppInventor classic that works perfect in background, no matter what i do with the phone. Is this an issue that can be fixed or i can say goodbye to my application in AppInventor 2 (or after the classic version of AppInventor will disapear)?

Thank you for your answers,
Cosmin

This is the intended behaviour; in AI1 if you are playing something
and a call comes in, you cannot stop it.

We can add a property to keep the sound in the background and also
catch incoming calls, but that's going to have to wait until we find
the time to do it.

cheers,
José

Thanl you very much for the answer. It sounds selfish when i say that
this is a very important property for the player, considering that i am
directly affected by it's disparition in Appinventor 2, but i think
there are a lot of application like mine, applications that are playing
audio stream(online radio) and will be affected by this modification
too. I have the application published on Google Play, it is made in
AppInv1 and i'm offering support for it, but when the AppInventor
classic will disapear and i will not be able to do modifications in it,
i think i will be forced to unpublish it because of this issue. As i sad
before, i made the same aplication in APPInventor 2, but i can't publish
it like this because the entire comunity that will download it will not
be abble to use it, because the sound stops imediately that the screen
turns off. Please forgive me for wasting your time reading this story, i
just wanted to point a little motivation to add this property to the
player before the AppInvetor classic disparition. I will be very glad.
Thank you very much,
Cosmin

Cosmin,

We will be supporting AI1 through this spring, so there's time to work this out.

Also, try using the Screen.BackPressed event to disable the back button while you app is playing?
Does that work?

I would also like to find out how to keep a player playing on phone screen turn off, or if the user goes back to Home, to do other things while the player is still running..

I know its possible to do this, as another app I have installed on my phone (Police scanner) will stay running during the phone screen turning off, or if you press home button, the icon will show at the top.  How is this possible to setup on App Inventor 2?

As already mentioned, this is not currently possible in AI2. There are many improvements that can be done to the player, but they are not trivial.

Anyone out there with Android experience that want to help us out with this, please do get in touch.

Cheers,
José

Well, if AI1 can do this, what did they remove from AI2 that it doesnt do it anymore?

One would "think" that there's something there that could be brought over from AI1 to AI2 that it does the same thing.  Or some setting somewhere that would keep the App active upon going to Home screen or screen going into sleep mode.

As already explained, the motive to change the behaviour is that in
AI1, if you get a call while the Player is playing in the background,
there is no way to stop it. It's pretty bad; try to talk to someone
while the phone is frying your ear with a song :)

cheers,
José

Well, theres a bit of a difference there if someone calls you... but when just the screen goes idle / to sleep.  It should be able to keep playing... Other wise, the user wold have to constantly be using their phone to keep the player active, no?
