Preface

Excerpts [with clarifying inserts, not part
of original article, included in brackets]:

The article after the Preface, about the
"Exercise Physiologist" who has Islit, is
from the same Islit individual who says he
loves diabetes:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/misc.health.diabetes/kPSUwvyxABA/WWXNefgxCAAJ

He uses the diabetes word without any clarifier
repeatedly in his Instagram website, and often
comments on insulin resistance at
http://drewsdailydose.com/

He's a huge supporter/promoter of exercise and
I've had trouble finding any mentions by Drew of
hypoglycemia risks from exercise.

He rarely mentions insulin dosaging or hypogly-
cemia. Per the following, one of multiple websites
Drew writes, he was diagnosed with Islit at the
age of 23 (the next article says he was diagnosed
at age 22):

[An article with more information about Drew
Harrisberg's diagnosis / dealing with Islit
than I've found anywhere else]

Sports scientist Drew Harrisberg can still remember
the 'most difficult day of his life'.

At the tender age of 22 the fit and healthy man
from Sydney's Bondi Beach began losing weight (both
muscle and fat), he was constantly hungry and thir-
sty and felt as though he was always exhausted.

A prick of his finger confirmed Drew had [Islit].

'I fought back tears in front of my parents. It was
a dark period of time around my diagnosis,' ...

Drew's blood glucose levels were 16 [probably 288
mg/dl, so it appears that his father having exper-
tise in dealing with Disparate High Glucose Condi-
tions (DHGCs) eye diseases led to Drew being diag-
nosed earlier than most with Islit who aren't diag-
nosed until the glucose level is much higher] - ...

... and he didn't realise how 'complicated, serious
and life-changing the condition could be'.

The person that did know was his father Brian, 58,
who has worked as an eye surgeon for 35 years - spe-
cifically in the area of [DHGCs] eye disease.

Drew threw himself into learning about the disease
and how he could use exercise and nutritious food
to maintain his good health [hmmm, most with Islit
would focus on insulin dosaging & hypoglycemia risk,
but for some reason Drew focused elsewhere]

[Drew's father says] 'I was sitting next to him the
day he was diagnosed. It was the worst moment of my
life. My face said it all. I honestly would have
preferred it to be me,' Brian said.

'The day Drew was diagnosed with [Islit] I went home
and stuck one of his [syringe's] needles [perhaps,
one of his lancets] into my leg out of sympathy for
the thousands of needles Drew would have to admin-
ister over his lifetime. ...'

[Don't know why Drew doesn't seem interested in
continuous glucose monitors or insulin pumps]

... 'It wasn't until I witnessed Drew turn his life
around that I began to feel like myself again.'

Drew threw himself into learning about [Islit] and
how he could use exercise and nutritious food [odd,
no mention of insulin injections or bloodpricks] to
maintain his good health [Drew's health at the time
wasn't very good].

Once he's ready for breakfast, Drew loads up on
plenty of greens and healthy fats with a plate of
three eggs, avocado, sauerkraut, spinach and two
pieces of paleo toast +10

'Managing [Islit] is like a full-time job. Fifteen
finger pricks per day. Six or more injections. Plan-
ning ahead, exercising safely, always having a sugar
source on you... everything is affected by [Islit],'
Fitbit ambassador Drew said.

'I aim to walk about 3,000 steps after every meal
and I like to hit a minimum of 15,000 steps for the
day.

'I eat wholefoods and avoid anything artificial or
processed [please, the wholefoods folks are loaded
with inordinate fear of so-called 'processed' food
that's about as harmful as (tries to think of some-
thing harmless) watching TV (which some studies
assert is harmful in a ridiculous exaggerated ....

... manner, IMO - heck, I'd be dead if watching TV
were as harmful as some folks claim and I'd also
be dead if processed food was as harmful as some
folks claim)], I spend time in nature, soak up the
sun and swim in the ocean every morning.

'Since being diagnosed I've been able to achieve a
70 per cent reduction in insulin requirements [not
helpful as we have no idea what his insulin dosages
are, neither before or after] simply by leading a
healthy lifestyle.' [We also have no idea what his
HbA1c levels are - we have plenty of info on what ...

... his exercise levels are - 6 or more injections?
It would be helpful to know his weight/BMI and his
daily insulin total, both before & after his 70%
reduction]

Exercise Physiologist [who has had Islit since
age 23] Speaks Out Against Keto: “I Looked Lean

Ketogenic diet as experimented with by Drew Har-
risberg who has had Islit since age 22 or 23:

o he relied on a low-carb diet to manage his
insulin for 8 years [how many carbs, not sure
but he says by going low carb his insulin dos-
aging was reduced 70% - of course, his exercise
is also a contributor to that] before going
full-on keto [with carbs the same as before?]

o on the full-on keto diet, he consumed "huge
amounts of saturated fat" [unknown what amount
he consumed]

o article quote: “Harrisberg noted in this post
that diets high in saturated fat can lead to
a buildup of fat inside muscle cells called
intramyocellular lipids, which can cause ...

... insulin resistance and lead to the develop-
ment of chronic diseases. As someone who has to
monitor his blood sugar daily, his health gains
from keto began to deteriorate, causing him to
ditch the diet completely.” ...

... “If I had stopped doing the ketogenic diet
at the two-month mark, I would be a massive pro-
ponent of the diet,” Harrisberg said in an Insta-
gram TV video.

“Thankfully, I reached the four-month mark and
realized the keto diet is a short-term, Band-Aid
solution. And the thing about a Band-Aid solution
is that eventually, it falls off, and I was left
in a place where I had to make a change.”

In a follow-up to the above, Drew Harrisberg says
“please understand that all diets will have pros
and cons depending on the individual’s preferences.
My intention is to expose the truths that many peo-
ple might not be aware of by combining the science
with my own experience.”
