This listserv was launched in June 2020 to provide a direct channel for members of the CoP to share questions, news, resources and best practices. Non-members are welcome to subscribe to this list, though we encourage you to join the CoP at middleneighborhoods.org.

About Middle Neighborhoods

Middle neighborhoods are neither the wealthiest nor the poorest neighborhoods in a community. Long seen as stable communities for middle and working class families, today many middle neighborhoods teeter on the edge of growth and decline. Middle neighborhoods in thriving regions confront challenges such as the displacement of long-term residents and loss of affordable housing. More commonly, middle neighborhoods are faltering in their ability to successfully compete for today's homebuyers, retail shoppers, and responsible landlords – and therefore at risk of falling into decline or distress.

The fate of middle neighborhoods has serious repercussions for the long-term fiscal health of towns and cities, the quality of life for current residents and the hopes of prospective residents to secure the American Dream. Despite their prevalence in America’s cities and suburbs, middle neighborhoods tend to be overlooked by national and local policymakers and philanthropies.

Yet a modest amount of investment has the potential to maintain middle neighborhoods as the heart of their communities, offering safe, affordable places to live with quality schools, homes, retail and other amenities - all while comprising an important, predictable source of property tax revenue that supports municipal service provision.

About the Community of Practice

The Middle Neighborhoods Community of Practice (CoP) is an informal network of people working in the field to strengthen middle neighborhoods. These people work in non-profits, local and state governments, at regional and national intermediaries, foundations, financial institutions, and research institutions. The CoP convenes for webinars, in-person meetings and site visits, resource exchanges, and focus groups and produces a bi-monthly newsletter. Our goal is to advance the practice of strengthening middle neighborhoods across the nation, by connecting practitioners to each other and to regional and national organizations interested in these efforts.

Ground Rules for the Middle Neighborhoods CoP Listserv

Please adhere to the following guidelines so we can keep the listserv useful for all members. Please read these over before posting or replying to the list.

1.  Try not to send more than one message to the list each day, and not more than several each week.

2.  Include your usual email signature (i.e. your name, organization, email address, where you’re from…) when you send a message to the list. This helps us get to know each other a little better and makes it easier for people to connect with you.

3.  If you ask the list for advice and get a variety of good responses off-list, we would love for you to take the time to compile the responses and share them with the list.

4.  Please stay civil and treat other subscribers with respect.

5.  Refrain from sending regularly published updates/newsletters to the list. You can send one of these announcements to the list every once in a while with a note, and include instructions for subscribing.

6.  Do not use the discussion list to raise funds for your organization or program. You can send periodic messages about trainings and other services that charge a fee, but do not ask list members to donate to your efforts.
