When I returned home from travel on Saturday I trried to open Microsoft Money and this window popped up.  This was on a Windows 10 Pro desktop 64-bit, with 16 Gb memory.

I have a 2nd copy of Money installed on my laptop which runs Windows 11 Home with 8Gb.

I copied the last file from Tuesday Jan 6 (the last time I used Money) and it opened fine on the laptop.

Both PC's are running MS Money Sunset Deluxe and have been running it for years.

Have you rebooted the computer?

Does sample.mny open?

If both yes, try restoring your newest or second-newest backup.

If still no joy, or sample.mny does not open, reinstall Money, and then put the patch into place.

I did try rebooting the computer after it happened.  There was a message about "user profile service failed the sign-in".  Then I rebooted again and all seemed OK.  Then was the problem about the memory error.  Then since MSMoney Sunset is installed on my laptop, I copied the *.mny file and two recent backups and put them on the laptop, in the userid\documents folder and they opened OK.  I got everything up to date.

This morning I started the laptop and go the  "user profile service failed the sign-in" error on the laptop.  But when I tried to launch money I got the exact same popup that I got on the desktop, on the laptop.  The desktop is running Win 10 and cannot upgrade to Win 11.  The laptop is running Win 11 after months ago I updated from Win 10.  Didn;t have any problem until now.

So I guess I need to correct the "user profile service" error.

When I look at the desktop, Windows 10 reports (for the programs) as having Microsoft Money Plus, Installed 04/03/23 with 100 Gb and version 17.  On the Laptop it shows Microsoft Money Plus, installed 11/25/2022 and version 17.  But it show 101 Gb.  I think this has been reported before.

Maybe I should do a reinstall before going foward?  I don't know why I got the user profile error.

I think you know that " "user profile service failed the sign-in"  is not from Microsoft Money.

Did you try sample.my or a copy of sample.mny

I just tried sample.mny and MSMoney opened!  This was on the desktop.

Does it make sense to reinstall money, or attempt a repair?

I have the application USMoneyDlxSunset and it is 34,842 KB.  The file is dated 12/18/22 which was, I think, when I last downloaded it

If you could be so kind as to mention all the patches I need, it will be a project for tomorrow.

With MSMoney running (Using sample.mny) the About Microsoft money shows Version 17.0.120.3817.

Once it's running again I am long overdue to run file fix "Nuke the Bills" to speed things up.

Thank you, thank you Cal!

If sample.mny opens, it usually means the installation is OK.

So you could try repairing your *.mny file. If you repair:

quick repair
level 2 standard repair
quick repair.

If that does not get you a good file,  restore your newest backup. If that restored file is a problem, restore your second-oldest backup. And so forth.

Cal,

OK.  Since sample.mny opens MS Money Sunset, do I open Money with that, and then run the repairs from within Money on my *.mny file that does not open?

Let me know.

I have opened the file in money while the sample.mny was opened and it worked.

I ran

quick repair
level 2 standard repair
quick repair

I looked at the accounts, and all is good again.  Because the file takes so long to load and to switch screens, I know I'll have to run "remove all bills data" and that will be for another day.

I really appreciate your help.  Getting this solved really makes my day.

Hi Mark,
Here's a link to that thread that you mentioned earlier regarding the 101GB reported file size.

Here are my notes on Remove bills:

File->Repair->RemoveAllBillsData

This Remove All Bills Data feature would be for people who have experienced their Money file to run excessively slow.

To get some information within the program,
File->Repair->RemoveAllBillsData
Read the information. Then click cancel.

Before proceeding, make an extra copy or backup of your file in case you want to undo something.

The problem will be that if you remove all bills, you will probably want to add at least some of your bills back.  This can be done manually with the aid of the reports that you print out before removing the bills.

A technique that could help simplify re-entering your bills afterward would be to go your register and selecting a representative instance of your past bill and selecting "Make Recurring" (Ctrl+E).  This would be especially helpful if the bill is complex, such as involving a split.

Thank you.  I remember that discussion because I noticed it myself a few years ago on Windows 10, but I did not remember there was a regedit fix.
