Does Microsoft Money 2003 run on the ARM version of Windows 11 using Parallels?

If you are asking whether Money will run on a Mac with an Apple Silicon processor through Windows installed in Parallels, the answer is yes.

in 2019, I installed Parallels on a 2013 Macbook and installed Windows 10 on the Mac, and MS Money Sunset Deluxe ran perfectly.

I never tried installing Windows 11 thru Parallels on that older Macbook which is functionally obsolete now.  Now, the iOS software is at least 3 versions obsolete.

Hello,

I have now installed Parallels and Windows 11, as well as my MS Money 2005 UK QFE2 and I am pleased to say that I have been able to open my MSMoney file without any problems. I have not done much work with it yet, but I have come across a couple of hiccups so far:-

1. The size of the screen font on MS Money is tiny and I do not know how to enlarge it.

2. I have somehow lost the ability to show subcategories separate from categories on entry forms and I have not been able to find the option to change this. This is of course not terribly important, but it would be great to be able to see things the way I am used to.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Chiti

Did you try changing the Windows Display and Text Scaling?

With Windows 10 it's at:

Settings>Ease of Access>Display

Hi,

I'm afraid I do not have "Options" under "Tools" (??)

Thanks for your help,

Yes, I did try all that, but it does not seem to affect MS Money at all.

Did you use the function in the attached screenshot?  Or isn't that available in Windows 11?
I use 200% because I have a large monitor and old eyes.

In case the screenshot didn't show up in the previous email.

Yes, Windows 11 has the same function and I did try it, but it does not change anything in MS Money.

These are the only options I get for the Categories settings.

I have been searching my records to see if I could find something about the subcategories issue, as I thought I had come across it before. Luckily, I found the message below, which I received from Cal Learner back in May 2012 (!!):

Another user, Cal Learner, has replied to a thread you have subscribed to in the Microsoft Money Forum.

I have noticed that Money 2005 does not show Subcategories in a separate box from Categories. Is there any way to do this? Not terribly important though.

Also - Is this version of Money the most up to date for UK users? Is there any difference between Money 2005 and Money Sunset Plus Deluxe?

If you copy the four lines between the begin/end lines below
into a file called 2cat.reg, you can double-click 2cat.reg in
Windows Explorer to create the key that will give you the more familiar dual boxes.

==========begin:2cat.reg===============
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money\14.0]
"UseDualCatMode"=dword:00000001
==============end:2cat.reg=============

The version that you downloaded is the final UK version.

I remember now that I did this at the time and it worked. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I dit it - i.e. where I can find this 2cat.reg, or where and how I can create it.

Thanks again Cal,

Chiti

While wracking my brain about these problems, I seem to remember that I had also had the problem of the tiny screen font on MS Money and I THINK I may have been able to improve things slightly through settings on Internet Explorer. Does that make any sense? Would it be possible for me to download an old version of IE to my new Windows 11 and try to experiment from there? If so, which version should I use and where would I get it from?

Thanks again,

Chiti

Chiti: To create that  2cat.reg file, create a file by that name with a text editor (Notepad or Notepad++ for example -- not a word processor such as Word).

Copy the 4 lines, and paste into the initially empty text file. Save the file.  Then you can run that  2cat.reg file.

>How do I change the font size in Money?

The ways that are available are

1.  Buy a bigger monitor for your desktop computer.  You may find that to be a stupid suggestion, but think about it.  You deserve it.   You would want the a big low-resolution monitor to get bigger dots. For bigger pixels, you want fewer pixels in a given area.   Maybe try using a big TV with big pixels as your monitor!

2.  Switch to a lower resolution on the monitor.  i.e., if using 1280 by 1024, switch to 1024 by 768.  This is least satisfactory IMHO, and may work really badly.

3.  On a blank spot on the desktop, right click and choose Display Settings. Change the DPI setting to a higher number.  You will have to experiment, and change back if you find the downside to outweigh the upside.

4.  This only works for the web-page-like pages: In IE, View->TextSize->Largest. I don't know how you get the right IE for Windows 10 or 11

5. https://groups.google.com/g/microsoft-money/c/N-jI-pE09Zc

Rather than me digesting it for now, I suggest you search for "9pt" and look at the discussions. This will benefit from new eyes checking this out. An increase to 9 pt from 8 point is a pretty small change.

When going back to look at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\surf.mar" things did not work as expected for me.

Thank you Cal. That's done and working, just like it did with your help those 12 years ago - Great!

Thank you also for this, Cal. It looks as if it will require time and experimentation, so I will get on with it and keep you posted. I know it is probably a tall order as I am dealing with too many variables (Parallels, Windows 11, MS Money ...) interacting with one another, but I will certainly give it my best.
Thank you so much once again for all your help,
Chiti

Cal,
Thanks for the link.  I found an old post in this forum and a font size solution that worked for me:

The following may improve MM on high def display screens:
1) Open Start menu, right click on MM icon --> more --> left click "file location".
2) In the newly opened "ProgramData>Microsoft>Windows>Programs>Microsoft Money Plus" folder right click the MM shortcut --> then left click "Properties".
3) Left click on the "Compatibility" tab.
4) Three quarters down the page is a "Change high DPI settings" button. Left click it.
5) Near the bottom of the page is the "High DPI scaling override" section. Select the "High DPI scaling behavior" check box.
6) Select "System Enhanced" from the option menu below the check box.
7) Click on OK twice as you back out of the menus.
8) Open MM to see if the changes improve MM's display, if not, unwind the changes.

I followed these directions exactly and it fixed MSMoney and also Photoshop Elements 10 which didn't play well with hi-res screens.
