Hey all,
I'm reading articles about Syria and I'm not understanding this
phrase: إرهابيون مندسون

Is مندسون

a type of people? I've never encountered that word before until
recently.

Thank you!

Hi

It is really dependent on the news source you are reading.

Originally, the Syrian government accused some outsider terrorist groups of invoking the violence (as opposed to peaceful demonstrators), as such the meaning is "agent provocateur"  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_provocateur

The opposing groups however has used the term to ridicule and rule out the possibility of any presence of outsider "agent provocateurs", so they use it to refer to themselves (like the-syrian.com).

Hope this helps,

Best
Shadi

Thanks Rania and Shadi.

Shadi,

I was reading al-sharq al awsat.
Does that tell you anything?

Hi Khadija,
Unfortunately it doesn't, you have to check the context. Asharq Al Awsat has double standards, so if it was talking about Syria then they would be probably using the word to ridicule the presence of these agent provocateurs and armed infiltrators. If they are talking in other contexts (like Bahrin) they will be probably mean it in its literal sense.

Best,
Shadi
