SMS to Private Numbers

I have been running the md380tools firmware on my 2 md-380s for a number of months now. Everything works great except for one thing. I cannot send SMS messages to private numbers. I've tried with local contacts and the 252993 number on Brandmeister. It sits for quite a while then eventually errors out.

I can successfully send SMS to group numbers.

When connected to my pi-star hotspot, I do see gateway activity with the source of RF and the statistics showing "DMR Data".

Can anyone help me troubleshoot?
