Dear All,We have sub contracted our pipe welding work based on ASME B31.3 and ASME sec IX qualified WPS to another organization. Is it allowed in ASME section IX for a sub contractor to use the main contractor's WPS.

If the subcontractor is approved by the client (The agency which awarded the contract to you) then you can use subcontractor WPS.
The main contractor WPS can be used by subcontractor as the work is awarded to the main contractor and it is only based on the internal work award system the main contractor have awarded the work to subcontractor and the welding control acticities are with the main contractor only.

Sorry guys – incorrect answer.
For ASME B&PV fabrication, WPS’s and PQR’s may not be transferred, given, swapped, or sold between independent companies. The only situation where another company or subcontractor can use your WPS’s if the other company or subcontractor works solely under the control of your QC program (such as might happen if you hired temporary welders) . You also need a provision in your quality control program documentation to describe how this is going to implemented.
Too many incorrect answers to this one.

No issue indeed, as long as there is a mutual consensus by both party.

Not if you are going to be compliant with ASME IX. This is strictly prohibited. B31.1 requires qualification in accordance with Sc IX, by the way. The Code is not giving this up to discussion. If the contract requires qualification in accordance with Sc IX, WPS’s can only be used as described in my previous reply.

Hi,
There is no issue if it is agreed in the contract or specified in the scope of work, as longs as the organisation/company who owns the WPS/PQR doesn't have any issues.
Or you may write a new wps based on this project sub-contractor scope and issue to your sub-con with the existing PQR.
regards,
LALU
