Dear Experts,

For vessels constructed as per ASME Section VIII Div.1 is it acceptable to carry out manual UT in lieu of RT?. Reference to which clause, it should be done?.

Regards,

Please refer the extract of UW-11(a) (7).

Ultrasonic examination in accordance with UW-53 may be substituted for radiography for the final
closure seam of a pressure vessel if the construction of the vessel does not permit interpretable radiographs in accordance with Code requirements. The absence of suitable radiographic equipment shall not be justification for such substitution.

Thanks & regards,

C. R. GANDHI

Seek equipment owner's approval for the use of recordable UT to replace RT (at least partially) to avoid the harzradous ionizing radiation method other than odd hours RT application. International Standard ASME 2235-9 Case allowed this. PAUT/TOFD procedure and operator qualification must be approved. UT has better advantages than RT in detecting severe type defects...ie..planar shape.
What concerned owners and certifying authoirty is NDT malpractises in steelwork industries. This can also happen in RT method too.

Hi Josit..! Good day..!!

As an alternative to the RT, the weld metal thickness > 13 mm (above ) may be Ultrasonically examined as per the requirements of 7.5.5 of ASME VIII Div 2

Ref : VIII Div 1, UW51 (a) (4)

ASME VIII Div 2 - 7.5.5 : Written procedure required as per Section V, Article 4, Mandatory Appendix VIII ( which covers only automated or semi automated scanning )

Conclusion: Manual UT not allowed. Try TOFD, if t>13mm

For Info: ASME 2235-9 case has been removed and incorporated in the code book itself.

Hope it helps you..!!

Hi

As per ASME Section VIII Div.1, 2013 edition,
UW-51(a)(4), the Minimum plate thickness for UT examination has been lowered from (1/2 inch) 13mm to 6mm (1/4 inch).

Now a manufacturer may perform UT in lieu of RT for all welds in material 6mm and greater in thickness using current UT technology such as Linear Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing.

Dear sir,

In my opinion, VIII Div 1 or Code case 2235 - 10, not mentioned about final seam. If you provide any reference, that could help me lot.

As per my understanding, it applicable for ALL WELDS ( t = 6 mm and above as per 2013 Edition ).  Please correct me, if I am wrong

Hi Satish,

Please see the code case along with discussion blogs on the same issue. The emphasis is on digital UT and state of art UT like TOFD  and Phased Array.

Thanks.
