We have a problem with the country polygon for Romania. Actually, my
problem is I cannot map anything around the southern border with
Bulgaria (around = ~30 kms away), but others have this too. Problem is
described here:
http://groups.google.com/group/map-troubleshooting/browse_thread/thread/6769c6d21b75cb84/65880a5a23a41bb3#65880a5a23a41bb3.
Another user suggests the cause is the country polygon (which makes
sense, since the problem is only around the border). However the
polygon is locked for editing.
Question is - can you unlock it for a short while and let us update
the polygon to match the actual border (for instance, the physical
border goes along the middle of Danube river, while the polygon cuts
corners and sometimes leaves up to 50 kms of the country not covered)?
We can request it to be locked once finished.
Another thing - the white line that shows the country border (which I
suppose is not an editable feature) is also incorrect. Admittedly, is
better than the country polygon, but still leaves portions of southern
Romania in Bulgaria while parts of Ukraine are shown as Romanian.
Besides being poorly drawn (cutting corners & such), I think the
border and the imagery are not aligned; the border follows the imagery
somewhat, but it's offset a bit to north-east.
How can we fix this?
We're always working on getting better border data, but because border
data is a sensitive issue, we want to make sure this data comes from
an official source. If you can give us a detailed list, with
coordinates and screenshots, of where the borders are inaccurate, we
will work towards incorporating the changes to enable editing in the
area that currently lies outside of the country polygon.
Please also see this Help Center topic for more information on why we
lock country borders to editing:

Jen.

I understand your reasons, but I doubt allowing border edits for a
short while would trigger a border war. There are no territorial
disputes between Romania and its neighbors; furthermore, a good amount
of the borders are natural ones (Danube river to the south, Prut river
to the east and Tisa river to the north), so it's quite difficult to
dispute them :).
1. The country borders (so not the country polygon, they are different
things or so it seems) are inaccurate everywhere. I'm of course only
bothered by the southern border where I usually draw things around,
but the problems are for all borders. As mentioned in my previous
post, it looks like the country border and imagery are not properly
aligned (besides being inaccurately drawn), so a quick and easy fix
would be to shift the borders accordingly.
I checked Maps and, compared to Map Maker, it fares much better. The
country borders in Maps are more accurate, and I wonder why you didn't
copy them in the first place (copyright issues probably).
2. The country polygon is way, way worse than the country border. At a
minimum, draw the country polygon to match the current border, this
would temporarily solve some issues.
Now, an example:
Link in Maps:
http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Romania&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.999937,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Romania&ll=43.630857,25.379105&spn=0.1322,0.220757&t=h&z=12
Same region in MapMaker:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=43.648994,25.378418&spn=0.133154,0.238953&z=12&t=h
You clearly see the difference. FYI - the border with Bulgaria is
mostly along the Danube river - all territory on the north bank is
Romania and all south bank is Bulgaria - the border should NOT touch
either north or south bank of the Danube; the islands along the river
belong to one country or the other, but I couldn't care less about
these since they're not inhabited.
Also check the country polygon I included as search result in the
second link - Zimnicea city is outside it (although - strangely - I
could draw roads in this city with no problem, however I could not
draw the DN5C that connects Zimnicea to nearby Nasturelu village (the
long segment that's currently drawn is made by extending an existing
segment - extending a road does not check for a valid address :).

I'm very clear you're using third-party data for borders; what I was
asking initially was why the Map Maker borders are far worse than the
Maps borders. Do you use a different provider for Map Maker?
At any rate, as long as you don't propagate the borders from Map Maker
to Maps and Google Earth (please confirm), it doesn't really make much
difference. Having a correct polygon was the important thing.

We have same problem at east side of the Mongolian border too.
Next link goes to a screenshot compared misplaced & correct borders
between Mongolia and China.

If GMM product team request detailed information about it, I can find
them and send to them from official source.
Even, we can see this wrong border from any paper based earth map or
atlas.

Something went wrong with the country polygon again. I remember I
checked it out right after being edited and there were some
improvements in my area of interest. Not for long, it seems the
polygon was edited in a matter of minutes and is again bad.
Link: http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=43.683515,25.339966&spn=0.116195,0.236206&z=12&t=h.
This was the sample I gave you initially :).
Even worse, it seems the editor screwed up the border with Serbia too.
Given that both Romania and Serbia are open for editing, I doubt our
serbian neighbors will be happy to see their border cities under the
Romania polygon. Note that this is worse that prior to the Jan 6th
change!
See example here: http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=44.870956,21.476212&spn=0.22774,0.472412&z=11&t=h.
Out of curiosity, I checked the other borders too. See here how
Romania polygon was extended over Moldavia:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=47.126681,27.89978&spn=0.21864,0.472412&z=11&t=h
Here the polygon eats up on Ukraine:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=47.978891,23.958435&spn=0.215113,0.472412&z=11&t=h
And here the polygon leaves some villages out on the border with
Hungary: http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=Romania&gw=30&ll=47.041118,21.754303&spn=0.218992,0.472412&z=11&t=h
I think trying to draw a country polygon in less than 400 points (or
whatever limit you're trying to keep it under) is a doomed project :)

@Ulzii - Thanks for posting about this. We'll get this looked at.
