I have the MakerGear M2 LCD interface which is the Viki and it took about 10 weeks when it was first offered, but I haven't installed it
because I discovered I don't really need it and will probably sell it.

Patrick,
Where did you find the connector configuration, mine did not come with a manual and i couldnt find online, how do i know where to plug all the connectors into the Rambo board.
Also if i install the LCD can i still hookup the laptop to it and use the original way or am i stuck with only LCD?

It took a couple of days to get to me after I ordered it.

My Rambo board is old enough that it didn't have headers soldered onto the i2c pin outs. Once I remedied that problem it only took about 15 minutes to have it up and running, including the time to download the firmware update.

The instructions can be found on the wiki at: http://makergear.wikidot.com/m2-lcd-panel

Yes, you can still hook it up to a computer.

The only problem I'm having is that the endstop switches cause the board to reset. I'm sure it's a simple fix though, I just ran out of time today to troubleshoot.

It's a truly brilliant piece of kit.

Hi all. I just received an M2 kit plus a Viki display and am working to assemble it. I intend to do a couple of test prints before adding the display, but want to get that hooked up pretty soon. Is the 24V Marlin firmware linked to on this page: http://makergear.wikidot.com/m2-lcd-panel still the best to use for enabling display support, or is there a more current build of something that would be better? I've seen lots of posts about people experimenting with various firmware mods for various power supply, display and feature combinations, and it's a little hard to keep track of what mods are essentially bug fixes vs. enabling new and/or experimental features... I'm comfortable building and installing firmware but would like to stick with something that is known stable in these early days of my M2 experience. Thanks for any pointers or gotchas to be aware of when enabling the Viki. FYI I'm aware of the 24V fan speed setting issue and will deal with that one in my gcode for now. Thanks,

-John

Any takers on my query above? It does look like there are a few more recent builds of Marlin that support 24V and the Viki, plus tweaks (e.g. hot-end temp triggered extruder fan). Should I be considering one of these builds as my first Viki-enabled firmware or stick with Makergear's posted version for now? Thanks.

My Viki is still in the box as well.  I've been meaning to hook it up, but have just been printing from the computer instead.
Hopefully I can get to this this weekend.  I plan on doing a visual diff of the 2 marlin builds, with and without the LCD, so I can understand the difference prior to enabling it.  I'll let you know what I find out.

John,

On my github page you will find two MakerGear M2 branches. MakerGearM2 is up to date with the latest Marlin code and is ready to work with a 24v M2 and Viki. The second branch is MakerGearM2_exp, and at this point only adds the software PWM of the fans at 123hz. This works extremely well and would be the firmware to grab if you're going this route. Just make sure you read through the entire thread on the firmware as there are changes around 24v bed fans and pin locations for the VIKI LCD.

Got it, thanks Curtis. That's just the feedback I was looking for. Can't wait to get this sucker printing! May be tonight, if not for sure by the weekend. Appreciate your work to keep us all in up-to-date firmware.

Curtis,

Ignorant (but not afraid to learn) mechanical engineer here... Can you point me to any links that walk through step by step how to get your firmware from the GITHUB site onto the printer?  I have no idea which files I need to transfer where and how to get them there or what to do with them once they are transferred.  I was able to get the MakerGear firmware update installed by using a step by step video that showed which buttons to click but this looks different enough that I'm pretty sure my chances of getting it wrong are in the 99% range ;-).

Basically all I know right now is how to open Arduino, find my config.h file and edit it transfer the revised file to the card.  The rest is foreign to me.

I also didn't see on GITHUB the description of how to rewire the VIKI.  Where can I find that write-up?

Let me know if you know of any good links to show how to do this.  Otherwise I can probably get a hacker friend to walk me through it when they get a chance.

Thanks,
Tony

I do not have a VIKI, but here are some relevant links, which if read in order should get you there:

Generic firmware update instructions:
  1. Get the Arduino software for your OS: http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
  2. Run it. Under the Tools menu, select your serial port, and for Board, select "Arduino Mega 2560 or Mega ADK".
  3. Open the Marlin.ino file from the firmware directory.
  4. Edit anything you need to, then click the checkmark in the toolbar to try a test compile. If there is a failure to compile because LiquidTWI2 library is missing, read the appropriate thread above.
  5. After it compiles successfully, connect your USB cable to the M2. Make sure no other program is trying to talk to it at the same time, like Simplify3D. Click the second button (right arrow) in the toolbar to start a transfer. Let it run. Once it is complete, you have new firmware.
