Well - I ended up running out of my Red - and now I'm printing the rest of my Really Big Dragon in White. I know this has been discussed in the past - but, figured I would ask again.

At this point - since the main body is 2 colors - I want to Opt to Spray paint it - to make it one color. Is that Viable w/ABS plastic? Also - I have a very Subtle triangular texture on it - via actual polys - although its not as well defined as it should have been. Will the paint hide that "texture" - or, if done evenly - should it have relatively no effect?

Finally - what kind of paint should it be? I thought I remember from before someone mentioning something like Krylon!?!

Thanks in Advance!

They make a "plastic paint"... I used to buy it at auto parts places (I think its for painting interior pieces)

Yes, Krylon "Fusion for plastics" if I remember. I've had surprisingly good luck with it on other plastics, though I haven't tried it on any makerbotted ABS. Even UHMWPE, which is supposedly very hard to paint, held it a little bit.

My local Ace Hardware has limited Fusion color selection, but there're more options if you need to look online. I can't remember if there was a suitable dragon red, but I bet you'll find something good enough.

Put it on with multiple very light coats and you ought to be able to see much of the texture underneath, though you will lose a little.

Good luck!

They also make plastic primer that you can use to make any spray paint stick to plastic.  I usually use Bulldog adhesion promoter that was left over from when I painted my cars bumper a few years ago.  Either one seems to work pretty well in my opinion.

Here a couple of things I've painted:

Be careful for "plasitc paint". Much of it contains acetone and can melt your prints. However "for plastic" just means it will bond to the surface well and is probably okay.

I've tried various types of spray paint and didn't have much luck on ABS; specifically Krylon white and RustOleum "colorshift" blue/purple. The Krylon was specifically "for plastic" and the RustOleum just said it would work on plastic.

For instance, even with sandings and a half-dozen coats of white Krylon "plastic paint", you could still see the safety orange bleeding through, making a peach color:

Just after painting: http://myplasticfuture.com/2011/08/20/the-finishing-of-thing-1/

Months later: http://myplasticfuture.com/2011/11/02/note-to-self-dont-replicate-things-that-are-flawed/

Krylon make a "plastic primer" which might help, but without it I've had nothing but disappointment.

YMMV,

I haven't tried spray paint on ABS yet, but the fusion for plastic
worked well on foam for a RC flying wing, although it melted the
Styrofoam I was using to prop up the wing. Walmart had a huge
selection.
Boo hoo only 83 views on my wing video after a year. I would like to
see 84 views by 2013!

Hey MacGyer - I especially like Ur Star type weapon design. And, all the painting looked good. I got some of the Krylon stuff 2day & tested on a spare piece - and it looks good! So - here goes nothing...
